Epilepsy Has Left the Diagnosed w/No Hope
I have had epilepsy since I was 16 years old, I'm 29 now. I had a left temporal lobectomy when I was 19. It helped my grand-mal seizures, but I still have occassionalpartial seizures. The bad thing about the surgery is that it destroyed my memory, concentration, and learning habits. Either way, I wouldn't change my choice. But I see in 2014, that a lot of neurologists, at least here in Wisconsin, really don't care. I never let my disability hold me back. I worked and went to college, but at the same time, I was also interested in boys and partying. Now I am a mechanic and own a business w/my husband. I just want all those w/epilepsy to know that you matter, each and every one of you. There may not be a cure yet, but there is help. And if you're young, go to school! Don't let your disability hold you back!
What a great message to those who are struggling with seizure disorders. You have quite an inspiring story. I was diagnosed with a mixed seizure disorder in 1998 when I was 20. My epilepsy is well controlled with medication now. I too have a good work life despite my seizures and agree with your message!!

Thanks .. I just don't think it's fair how some doctors treat epileptic patients like a mouse, doing EEG's, testing non-FDA approved medications, and making them feel like there's no hope. At least that's how some doctors I've seen treated me. There is hope. And I love the new training they are doing with German Shepards and Labs for seizure detection. It may be a little difficult dealing with having seizures, but I believe everyday that I am still here for a reason because some seizures I've had in the past were life threatening. Don't consider yourself "disabled". I call it a little malfunction lol. Just like when the car can't go in reverse .. well it's a malfunction in your transmission! lol
