Disclosing Disability at Work

October is Disability Employment Awareness Month

Have you told you employer about your disability? What was the response?

If you haven't told you employer, what do you think the response would be if you did?

The two people who are directly in charge of overseeing my work (one is directly my supervisor) were aware of some of my health issues before I was even well enough to consider getting a job. My husband was working with them and when I was having lots of appointments at the hospital and needing help with my medication at home they helped me out by trying to let him work within the city as much as possible and limiting his overnight out of town trips.

Someone within senior management who had to give the ok for my position is also somewhat aware, although I am unsure of what exactly he knows, other than the fact that I have chronic health problems so a job with casual hours where I mostly work from home was ideal for me.

I'm not officially classified as disabled at work on HR forms. I am unsure of the criteria for that, it may have to do with accomodations but the entire position that was created for me is an accomodation, I didn't apply for an existing open position. If it's more for individual tax related stuff, I haven't been able to qualify for anything like that with the government. I tried to get the disability tax credit but my doctor wouldn't fill out all the relevant sections, only some, so there was no point in sending it in as it would just be a denial 'strike' where it could hurt my chances in the future.

I have been incredibly lucky with where I am employed at the moment. They know I have both PTSD and severe migraines and despite the fact they have certainly got frustrated that I have not been able to work consistantly they have been very understanding. They give me lots of flexability to work from home when I need to and seem to respect that I am doing everything I can to be able to work.

Having that trust has made a huge difference to me, and I am slowly having to learn that they are not going to fire me because I was off for a week with migraines ahah :). I think work are very appreciative that I am incredibly up front with them and that I've kept them in the loop. They know I am having therapy, seeing a chriopractor, doctors, etc.etc.etc. so they know I am doing everything I can to help myself.

A lot of places that are reasonable are respectful of disabilities as long as you prove you are trying your best and will still work hard. I know that is certainly not true of all!!! I would have had to have left my current company if they didn't react so well so I am very glad that they seem to be working with me not against me :O
