Music and Disability : how do they match?
Hello everyone !
The other day while listening to a song, i thought about the fact that music-listening is one of the most popular leisure activities. Music can be an ubiquitous companion to people's everyday lives. Music is a language, with or without words, serving as a medium for people from all walks of life to express their deepest thoughts and emotions.
So i reflected about it and asked to myself how it can be important for people with certain health-conditons. I've read about it and found that there are several essays that have been written to point out the positive effects music has in people with any kind of disability.
There are essays that share a theoretical and methodological connection to Disability Studies, especially its central idea that disability is a social and cultural construction. Disability is shown to be a core feature of the musical identity of music makers (especially composers and performers), something that affects their lives and works and their public reception. Music affirms the notion that disability is a performance, something you do rather than something you are. These essays make the case that disability is not something at the periphery of culture and music, but something central to our art and to our humanity.
* What is your experience with music?
I will host a discussion about it on THURSDAY 16th at 4 PM ET , I look forward to read about your experience and to meet you in the Disability room to discuss about it together!
In my opinion, music is life, and if not for real, than it is definitely worth living for!
I litteraly grew up with music, in many ways. I did not only listen to a lot of music, but I also played several instruments, and started writing and singing my owns songs. When I lost my partner and right leg, 5 years ago, I had been in a depression for 3 years. it was only after that, that I found out that music could actually help me to get through those hard times.
It took some time before I was playing my instruments again, and for some instruments like the drums it felt impossible because I missed my right leg. I also started writing my own songs again, and even though that caused me a a lot of emotional struggle (because ot the wrong inspiration), it still helped me.
I am proud of my music and one day I will lookback at it with pride :)
Music might not be life for everyone, but it is to me! <3

Hi @RedSinner20 !
Thanks for sharing about you. I'm sorry to hear that you had to face those hard moments. I hope that now you feel better than you felt in the dark time.
So music has played a big role in your life. That is awesome.
Nice thing you create your music! What are the instruments you play?
I'm sure you can be really proud of yourself, because everything done with passion is a small masterpiece!

Well, I play electric, bass and acoustic guitar, piano, violin, and well i'm trying the drums now again, but i'm still struggling a bit, but its a great feeling when you see or hear improvement. :)
And yes! passion it is for sure! <3
@RedSinner20
WOW !! That's amazing!
You play the main instruments !
So you are trying to play drums again, i am glad you are doing that too! You like it, so i am sure it gives you a positive feedback!
Perfection is in the love we bring to everything we do, more than in the performance itself!
Well done!
music irritates me a lot. i have hypersensibility to noises
@vivelespatates
Hello !
Sure, if it's not something you enjoy then no need to listen to it!
Have you ever tried soft relaxing sounds with low-volume?
