Your Talents and Abilities - Art Therapy for the Afternoon

Can you pinpoint moments when you felt somebody appreciated your talents and abilities? Who are the people that made you feel that way? What are the places where this happened? Reflect on this for a moment.

Take a mindful minute. Close your eyes and turn your focus on your breath. Let the words associated with these moments freely flow into your thoughts. What are these words? What are some related images or colors and shapes that feel connected to these words?

Once you feel ready, begin selecting images, words, phrases, or colors from the magazines and newspapers. Use these to compile a collage. Make something that reflects moments when somebody appreciated your talents and abilities. You might use actual magazines or images online and put them together in a “paint” style program, or it can be abstract and in your mind. It is all about how the pictures and words make you feel.

If you feel comfortable, you can share your collage and share what it means to you. Or you can describe what your collage would look like if you made one. What would you create, and what does it mean to you? Would you like to have something like this on your wall somewhere you could see it often?

To make a collage out of magazines, you will need:

• Old magazines, newspapers, picture books, and scrap paper

• Colored pens and pencils

• Scissors and glue

• Cardboard or thick paper for the base of the collage

@BlindGrapefruit I learned how to make a collage when in grade school. It was so much fun and I loved it. What a great way to express oneself!

I encourage everybody to try it out and show us your collage! You will have a blast!

It is ok to think about what you would create and talk about it without doing the actual work. It is more about the process in your consciousness than anything.
