Aging with a disability
Hello everyone! I read a lot of post from younger disabled people who struggle with adjusting. My heart goes out to you all because living with a disability is not for the weak! I was born with a rare condition called Osteogenesis Imperfecta and I'm about to turn 47 in a few months. This condition starts out rough, then usually stabilizes through adulthood, and slowly declines with age and hormone fluctuations in middle ago. Basically I have the bones of an 80 year old in my 47 year old body. There is barely any medical support for those of us aging with this condition because it's still considered a pediatric condition and most people with OI didn't live past the age of 30. Surprise! There's a huge population of us aging now with barely any support in the medical community. I've actually had doctors tell me there's nothing they can do and I'm lucky I'm still alive, so basically stop your b*&#$ing! I have a lot of chronic pain from hundreds of broken bones over my lifetime and I'm not longer able to work or drive. I'm learning to accept these new limitations and would like to connect and offer support for anyone who resonates with my story. We are stronger as a community! ❤️

Thank you for creating such a safe and beautiful space for people to share and for opening up and sharing your experience to benefit others, that's special, I'm genuinely sorry you aren't given the support you deserve 💛

You are such an inspiration to all of us. You demonstrate what perseverance and determination are. And in the process, you make the lives of other people better. I wish you only the best in your incredible journey !

Hi there…I can relate somewhat. I am 95 and developed Spinal Stenosis a few years ago. I can only walk around in my studio apartment. To go anywhere, I require a wheelchair and someone to push me outside and accompany me to appointments. Otherwise I’m bedbound with my TV and my IPhone. My kids aren’t around, one grandson is and is always willing to help on this. But he works and his mother, my older daughter, is trying to set him free.
I spend my time in my phone with Google AI online learning about ways to help my body and mind. It’s such a help.
Hang in there: hugs….Joyce
