Disabled Advocy sinnce adulthood

So I'm wondering ever since I became an adult.  If I have always been an disability advocate even if I didn't know it at the time.  I had to contact the local bus company a ton of times.  Two of them had was during college.   At least twice was during Day-program.

One year during my too many years of college,  that there was a new stop at the one corner and coming home after a couple of times of getting off there- a driver didn't let me off there and said "they never stop there".  I emailed the bus company about that problem.

Another time I emailed them to complain about the walk between that bus stop and the other bus stop I need were too far apart. (what I didn't tell them in the email is: The only guarantee way I would have been able to catch the last bus of the home-ward  based  bus would be if the driver of the bus opened the doors for me at the the side of the sidewalk.  Which at least one bus driver did.)

Two times I did it during the day-program.  So FYI because of the College-bound bus I got a fear of back doors this is important. So I developed a habit of  going out the front of buses.  This is important for one of the emails I sent.

One time the AD for stops was turned off or wasn't working.  A friend at the program had a blind friend who occasionally came to the program.  This was in my pre-Molly watching days so I didn't know how to interact with a blind person at the time.  So I was on the bus going to the program, and  the AD was not functioning and at some point the blind friend asked if we're at (street before the stop for the program) and I spoke up and said  "No we're not.   I can tell you when its time to get off".

As soon as I got to the program and used their computers (I was obsessed with their computers after they got them in 2015?) I wrote the bus company an email about how I had to assit a blind friend off the bus because of the AD not working.

The other time,  I was forced to go out the back door, because I couldn't go through the front door because there were 3 strollers at the front of the bus.  One stroller had been there first and 2nd of 2 more strollers blocked the pathway to the bus.

At some other time, I can't remember where I was going but it was someplace new at least for me and I was solo on the bus.  So I asked the driver when to press the button or bull the cord and the driver was rude "You will know when we get there" but how was i suppose to know when I never been there before?.    I emailed sometime after that.

I emailed them about the buses being late past the Pickwick Mall in Toronto when there should have been a bus at 4:05pm and there isn't a bus until 5:25pm.  The 2nd bus is on time.

The 2nd to last time was March 2024,  when I emailed them about lack of buses on weekends from the regional train station.   They told me about the "on demand" app, but they also told me you need to book it in advance.    That would have been useless for two out-of-town women who wanted a bus,  who didn't know about it,  and one woman's  phone was dead, even if she had known about it.

I wrote an whole accessibility email to them in June to tell them my concerns because I had to miss their accessibility panels in April due to other commitments.

It's not just the bus,  I had to write to Go transit once.  I should have done it twice.  But I can't fix the past.  I just will make sure If I see an elevator out of order at a  train station again email company right away

But the one time when I actually did someone was this year (2026).  The other Month Mom and I went into Toronto.  But we found out that the elevator was too slow to close it's doors so we decided that going downstairs was faster method for us.  When we got back to town we're told by staff the that elevator was working.  But when we tried it it was the same as it was that morning.

I'm sorry to hear of your difficulties handling the bus service.. I had to ride a bus in the summer with no air conditioning.. Me and my wife were melting.. so I completely understand your frustration.. They will even pass me up when I'm standing at the bus stopp weekly.. I hope they start to service you properly and you get to the bottom of this situation..🌲

@AsherTree The bus service has gotten worse over the years.   I didn't write to the bus company at the time,  but since 2022 the bus drivers believe they should be on NASCAR track then on street.  When I was coming home from the mall one Saturday,  I think this was the second bus and the only spot I could get was on a Accessible seat and it was a side one the middle chair was up.  So when the bus suddenly stopped at a stop two stops down from one I got on- and  I went into the "hole" between the two open seats.  Luckily i didnt go down any further then I did because i was wearing a backpack.  Two other people on the bus had to help me. out of there.    The last time I went to the mall alone,  I almost fall down while trying to get to a seat.   Another woman on the bus told the bus driver off.

These new buses have a lot of lack poles so that makes it even less safer.  And there's a lack of buttons and in the accessible cord that is suppose to hang down the accessible cord for those who sit in the seats who aren't in wheelchairs.  It means getting up to pull the cord is dangerous for people who are shorter.

Wow, that is terrible that your bus situation is so deplorable.

I saw a wheelchair person get off my bus and crash to the ground.. Yes, alot of bus companies are fraudulent,  we all got to be careful these days..🌲

@AsherTree  I don't have a choice but to use the bus when I go to the mall.  It's too far away to walk (2 towns over) and i don't  and can't drive outside of video games.

But the point of the thread wasn't to rant.  It's was to share the fact, I  realized I have always been a disability advocate since I was 18 even if I wasn't aware or knew what it was at the time due to my emails to bus company.

Well if you was or wasn't now you are!🌟

I would say at least 80 percent of disabled people have it worse than the rest of us.. Neglect, poverty, abuse, logistics, discrimination,  loneliness are just a few of the many obstacles they face... Your definitely one of the good ones!!

Kudos to you🌲🙌
