Self-help gurus oppressive?
Okay so I have looked through self-help books and resources for a large portion of my life. I've been on SSDI since 2011 and still managed to get a Bachelors degree but I still struggle to have financial privilege. Anyway, I am currently following a self-help guru on Youtube who tries to convince people that they can move to L.A. with no or very little money. I reached out to her to ask how people on SSDI or fixed incomes can move and survive in L.A. and she didn't want me asking those questions because it wasn't the point of her message. Anyway, I found it a bit hypocritical and strange. Also, before going on disability I did read the Secret. Personally I feel that most of the information and advice given in these books, websites, etc comes off as oppressive, ableist, and geared more to the well off people who want more. What's your thoughts on this matter?

I don't follow self help gurus but I thought I'd share my two cents. Everybody has limitations when it comes to what they want to do. Not everybody can pack up and leave to another country or state, but I also believe that if you really want it, you have to work and plan for it. It may not happen in a day, month or year but if you really want something, I think the possibility of realizing that dream exists. The most important thing is not comparing your achievements to someone else. So perhaps if a self help guru tells you that you can move to LA within the year, that would be foolish since they don't know your financial or living situation.
However, if they seek to inspire others to dream big, then maybe that's a good thing? Oppressive feels like a strong word, since it's a choice of whether to listen or not.
I don't find self help gurus inspirational or helpful, so perhaps this is over my head.

A lot of self-help literature is written by privileged people to get other privileged people's money... Of course it helps to believe in yourself and all that, but not everyone can do anything if they just want it enough or think positively enough. This bs can be hurtful.
