They really said wha? - When outreach for support turns unsupportive
It's hard to figure out where to stick post sometimes. It's even harder to figure out what to title them.
But here's the story...
I have a very small group of people that I deal with on any given day. Some have been family friends for years (more the family's than mine) and some are people I grew close to for various reasons.
I have a hip injury (15% total body) that limits my activities - no more hiking, no more biking, and if I do something strenuous like lifting or trying to carry heavy loads - I may not feel like standing or sitting for long periods and come across antsy.
I struggle with my altered physical being (used to be rather active - hikes in the mountains, 5 miles bike rides that I was building to mtn bike riding eventually, intensive workouts, no problem helping ppl move houses, etc). I have been grieving the loss of my old life for some years now with reinforced actions of people around me - oh, you can't do that; your life is so different now, sorry you can't join us, you just need to sit down out of the way here so others can do X; etc NEVERMIND the Doc who said you are this way for life, you'll have a limp for life, your hip will dislocate the rest of your life while you try to do things - just suck it up and move on.
I recently hit a point of realization - I have been grieving and stuck in the sadness of the loss and with what has been said with you can't do that and other obstacle talk -- I've grown weary. (I also have food related auto immune now, I mourn the loss of being able to eat whatever. Sounds wierd I guess but until its you.)
The solutions from the "support" network -- why don't you just quit working and draw disability? Why don't you just draw disability, you really aren't what employers are looking for? Why doesn't she just apply for disability and sit at home? An employers is going to see her cane, smile, give a courtesy interview and she'll never hear back (that actually has happened) -- so why does she try?
Do people actually think they are being helpful with this damaged goods labeling???? That's what it feels like.
Maybe I'm just jaded. Maybe I'm just angry. Maybe I'm still grieving and I'm in denial. IDK... it just sucks.
Anybody else get the kit glove treatment or the solution for your problems is to draw disability?
Just curious.
@diplomaticconfucious I wish I had the right answer. I can relate to your anger and disappointment when the support network isn't much help and doesn't support on things we like to achieve.
I was born with my disability and the answer I found for myself was: I don't allow people to drag me down by telling me what I can't do or should do how they think is right for me. I make up my own mind and try to figure out how I can achieve the things I want.
Sometimes I have to adapt. Who doesn't?
