Has Anyone Here Been Skinny Shamed? I feel alone about this.

Body shaming. Chances are, a lot of us have gone through this. All forms of body shaming suck, and there is no excuse for putting others down because they look a certain way. however, what i wanna talk about today is Skinny Shaming in particular. being called a "bag of bones" "unhealthy" anorexic" "disgusting."( and of course being called the infamous skinny b*tch) When all about that bass came out,my plus sized friend told me it was about "skinny b*tches like you". People blame skinny teens for affecting plus sized peoples self esteem. But is it really our fault that we were born into a society where it was indoctrinated that skinny=beautiful? I've had my fair share of self esteem issues that, when vocalised, were dismissed as "attention seeking", because apparently skinny people don't have insecurities. When i look in the mirror on bad days, I still see myself as either too fat or too skinny. is it really fair to insult us naturally skinny people for being the way we are? I've always felt alone about this topic and it would mean the world to me if you guys could share your experiences. as always, I'm just a PM away heart

That was my fate until I suddenly gained weight and landed at the other end of the clothing rack. I grew up being accused of anorexia non-stop, plus people constantly saying "I hate you" because I ate so much and was thin. Never mind I was not in control of it, that it meant a simple cold but could flatten me for months and or land me in the hospital. It must be awesome to be skinny right? :/

Yes, I was at gymnastics and a friend told my i looked skinny. I smiled and said thank you. Then she said "rreeaalllyy skinny" with a concerned look. I haven't taken off my hoodie at practice since.

All of the time. I used to be overweight a few years ago, and then I lost a lot of weight and now in skinny. I've been trying to put on weight for the last two years but only gained a few, not enough to make a difference to the people in my life who put me down. I have my brother pointing at me and calling me a vulture and telling me I never want to be like you. I have other people telling me that my face is too small (when in reality I've always had a small face). My moms friends and my mom herself make comments that I'm thin. They make me feel and think that there's something wrong with me and that I'm not even considered a human anymore. I'm depressed by all this negativity and need it to stop. It's seriously had a serious toll on my life as now I get anxiety attacks and upset when I hear comments like this. All these people did was take a young confident woman and turn her into a weak minded individual.

I have been. My parents skinny shame me almost every day. My extended family does whenever I see them. Once, my uncle told me that "any guy would love to be with you... If only you had some meat on your bones". You're definitely not alone in this!

The Skinny Binge Eater

*Trigger Warning*

I've always been underweight my entire life, I have a history of Anorexia, Bulimia and this year I developed a Binge Eating Disorder. But I've recognised a sickening fact about being a Skinny Binge Eater - people do not understand. So allow me to explain the every day struggles of being a Skinny Binge Eater vs a Fat Anorexic (BTW I am using descriptive words, these words are neutral, it is your choice on how you percieve these words, I do not believe in censorship, political correctness or euphemisms - I do not mean to offend or cause distress)

Admitting you have an eating disorder:

But you don't look like a Binger

But you don't look Anorexic

People who are unsupportive of your recovery:

Maybe eating more will make you look better

You're still thin so your disorder isn't that serious

Maybe eating less will make you look better

You're still fat so your disorder isn't that serious

How people treat you around food:

Give that girl a cheese burger

*Gives second serving*

Lay off the french fries

"Are you really going to eat that?"

People who are unsupportive of your appearance:

Real women have curves

Bones are for dogs

No one wants a fattie

Lazy, unhealthy and a burden

Sizes:

Size 0 isn't a real size

This store isn't for people of your size

Body Shaming in society:

Anaconda, All About that Bass etc.

Tumblr, Social Media and General Media backlash

Dear Fat People

Magazines - Photoshopping, Beach Body Ready, Pressure to Diet etc.

We all struggle ,all of us. Some of us talk about it. Others don't. Some of us are afraid and hurt and try to hide behind a mask. Bullies survive because we allow them to. Perhaps directing our attention to what we can do to support our own lives we would not have to worry about what others think of us. Good people are there too if we focus on finding them!:)

Ugh! Yes! People have no idea that it's a struggle to be skinny just as much as being overweight!

I've often criticized for being too extreme --getting too skinny, then getting too heavy, eating too healthy or not enough, then eating too much junk. I think a lot of our comments are based out of fear, avoidance, and unacceptance. I think a lot of body shaming comments are relfections of insecurities within ourselves, coming from a lack of understanding of what health really means. And I think we can't have one extreme of body shaming if we don't have the other.

@imwithhealthtoo I am SO confused about what real health really is. I am starting to think recently that NOTHING extreme is the best health. The new rage is being super-fit. I got on that bandwagon, but I don't think it's healthy. Of course there's the rage of cutting out sugar entirely, and the green juicing and everything. I was on that bandwagon too, but it takes over your life and it may be great for your body and your brain but I don't think it's great for your emotional or social health. Of course Olympic athletes are super-fit, and no one would call them unhealthy. I duno man, I'm confused about it. Is "health" a different definition for everyone? I know moderation is important...

@singercrystalspirit it totally is confusing!! I think health is when we feel mentally, physically, and spiritually at peace with ourselves. Its when we are able to respond to our bodies signals for food and rest without stress and with a sense thst we are nourishing and caring for ourselves. Its eating food that sounds appetizing and tastes good, and you are not eating it because you feel you should. Health is eating until fullness, knowing your body can choose the right portion sizes for itself. Health is relaxing around food and choosing food that makes you feel energized and happy. Health is a constant learning process of coming more in tune with your bodies signals and accepting that you are always changing and will not always eat the same way. Thats just my take! What do you think?

@imwithhealthtoo I think that sounds really nice, and I wish, wish, wish wish wish that I could live that way. My life is a constant struggle to survive. I feel I need to constantly plan, schedule, arrange, goal-set, in order to survive. It's cut-throat, I don't have a solid support system, I'm on my own... I wish I could live in the way that you describe.

@singercrystalspirit it takes a lot of time to get there but it is definitely a nice place to be. And planning in terms of health or generally? I know what its like to feel unsupported and it must be so hard for you to struggle so much. Sending good vibes your way!

@imwithhealthtoo Thanks I need them :) (The positive vibes). Sometimes I wonder what I did to deserve the lack of positive and supportive things and people in my life.

@singercrystalspirit i dont think you did any thing to deserve a lack of support at all, everyone deserves to be heard and helped. I think its just situational. What do you think? What would your ideal support system look like?

@imwithhealthtoo Thank you ❤️ Ideally I would have a family who loves me and accepts me for who I am, rather than wanting me to be someone and something I'm not in order to be acceptable to them or to please them. A family who would be supportive of me whatever I'm going through rather than blaming me for the pain or struggle I'm feeling and facing. I'd really like to have a partner, too. And I do have some close friends... I'd like to have more of a network of connected people. A lot of my people are scattered. You know what I mean? I'd like, really like, to find a community, someplace where I belong.

@singercrystalspirit do you feel like you arent emotionally close woth some people? And it is so helpful to have a family who is supportive and caring no matter what. I also feel like I dont have great support and feeling like you belong can be a wonderful feeling! I hope you might be able to find that one day ❤️

@imwithhealthtoo I hope you find the support you need!! Life feels SO much better when you feel supported or safe, I think. I tend to encounter a lot of relationships where people either want to be too close to me, or not close enough 😕 I guess I just keep trying, and hope I find relationships that feel just right? What do you think?

@singercrystalspirit i definitely agree that having a lot of support makes things so much better, and i cant say i have relationships where i feel super close to other people. I am also trying to work om that and sometimes feel like i am a bother to some people. I feel like the fact that we are trying to find better relationships is so important and i think its so posible!

Yes, definitely! Some people just feel that judging others will make them feel better about themselves when it's honestly sickening. I think it's best to just understand that not everyone can be satisfied and that they'll always judge you no matter what. Just be yourself and don't give them the satisfaction :) -From someone who has and still is skinny shamed.

I am on the medium to skinny side but before I used to look leaner and thats when people were really blunt about it. Comments used to be like, "I cant understand how you like fruits maybe thats why you're so skinny" since I really like fruit which comes as a shocker to most of my colleagues/ acquaintances. It took a while but now people accept that I do, in fact, like fruit.
