Here's what you don't say to someone with an eating disorder
yesterday my mom decided that it was a good idea to take me to eat lunch with her and my aunt. Here's what they said:
Aunt: Don't you think she's getting a bit thin?
Mom: It's because she's eating less
Aunt: It's okay though, skinny is good! Keep it up, healthy girl!
Mom: She's just going through that phase.
Aunt: Are you going to tell me your secrets? What do you eat?
Mom: Today for breakfast she had oatmeal.
Stop mom. Please. Who the heck would tell someone what their anorexic daughter eats? I'm just so triggered and annoyed right now.
I'm sorry honey *hugs* would you like to talk about it? :) we are here for you. Please feel free to message anyone.
I guess talking about it would be nice.
Yay! Connect with any listener :) we are here for you honey. *hugs*
When I get ready to eat I feel this strong urge of I gues like frenzy hunger and I make a lot of food and not even half way through i do not feel the ravinous hunger anymore. I finish the rest of my foodbecause I gues I feel like I have to or something. Then I feel all bloated and stuff. No one really understands when I say what's going on and no one wants to really help me so far. I'm not fat or anything, I barely gain weight but I don't lose weight either. I don't really know what to do about it but its just an issue I've been having for a while.
You're not the only one, the exact same happens with me. I do it especially with fruit and vegetable platters because it's healthy foods, but i eat so much that i feel like throwing up.
My friends at school always talk about how the college food makes them fat and how they are so stressed and when I say anything they tell me to stop complaining. Little do they know that I find comfort in making myself throw up. I don't know how to tell them because they are kind of to blame
I find comfort in cutting myself, I love to feeling afterwards and the burn when I'm doing it.
I lost a lot of weight to my eating disorder, a couple of years ago, and someone asked me my secrets. I felt... horrified. It was a weird moment, because I would hate for anyone to do to themselves what I do to myself, but I still do it to myself.
It was really upsetting.
I wouldn't wish this on anyone... and anorexia is not just a 'phase'. I'm an adult, and I have an ENDOS - I was diagnosed just before or after my 20th birthday... two years ago. It's not something people 'go through', it is something you live with for years.
That is a really helpful post for others here to read, best and you have made a great contribution to our community here in sharing an example of ' what not to say'. :-)
That totally sucks. Sometimes I feel like no one understands.
Something I find hard to deal with is when friends and relatives tell me and my anorexic children that they 'look so beautiful and thin and look like models' when they clearly look and are very ill and underweight. These very people could be helping us but are really making things worse. (Hint: do not comment on appearence in terms of weight, encouraging someone with anorexia into obsessive perfection in anything, or to put the desires or needs of others before their own needs.)
When I was in high school my grandma took me dress shopping during the summer. This was the summer where I started starving myself. When she dropped me off back home and I thanked her for the dresses she told me that I can show her thanks by losing weight. If that doesn't fuel your fire then I don't know what does.
So... I gain so much weight. And people just don't stop saying things like "Did you gain weight?" "You look better now" "You used to be so skinny" "Your look so much better now, you look healthy, you used to look sick" "I bet your boyfriend likes better your body now" It's like "shut up!!!" I dont care if you think I look better now. I just can't feel confident now. I need to loose 10 kilos again. I want my body back!!!!
I think people should stop commenting on weight and body shape. No good comes from that. I don't know that you need to lose weight, but people shouldn't talk to you like that no matter what.
