Hello, I'm a college student who just moved out of my home. At first I thought this step is gonna be easy but then I started to miss home like crazy. These past few days I have several mental breakdown and I can't stop crying. My mind keep bring me back to the safety of my home with my parents and my sister. I really miss them.

I have weird connection with time, and my mind keep thinking about those times I spent with my family in the past, before college, when things were so simple and easy. Now I feel like growing up is so hard and I don't think I'm ready yet. I want to call my parents but I'm afraid that I'm gonna cry in front of them. Can somebody help overcome my situation? I am desperate

@Whiterwings1 Hey, a lot of us feel homesick after we go to college, especially when we have stayed at home with our parents for all of our schooling. It's understandable because there's a lot of new stuff that you're left to deal with without the support of your caregivers. And the connection does not feel as strong anymore. It might take some time but I believe you'll adjust. It helps to keep in touch with them in whatever way you can. Good luck :)

@Whiterwings1

Hello, Whiterwings! I definitely understand how the feeling of not being home can make you miss it more. I hope you do know that your parents surely do miss you the same! Though, it can be tough to continue when sometimes all you want is a home cooked meal, I hope a day comes where you come back home feeling prouder of yourself and your accomplishments.

In regards to your question, I'd suggest you to call your parents, even if you feel that you would cry as it would be you sort of opening up your emotions rather than bottling it up. Also, the distance is never easy but I believe in you to push right through! After all, your parents believed in you just the same. I hope you feel better <3

Hey @Whiterwings1, thank you so much for sharing your story.

I completely understand how you feel. When I first "left the nest" (albeit under different circumstances than you), I struggled a lot. It was hard for me to feel comfortable away from the comfort that I felt and had all my life. But slowly, over time, I managed to overcome those feelings and that process made me feel like a new person.

Don't worry about having to "be strong", your feelings are perfectly valid in this situation. It is strange and can feel lonely to have to basically "start fresh" in such a stressful environment like college. A family is supposed to be one of the most important support systems in a person's life and it sounds like that is exactly what they were (and can still be) for you.

While college is a time to find and learn independence, it doesn't have to mean being completely cut-off from your loved ones back home. Thankfully, it's easier now more than ever to keep in touch with them. Try scheduling a weekly call with them and start from there :)

I hope you find your way back to a positivity ❤️

I think a lot of us have the tendency to think that we won't be homesick, or at least that we'd be able to get through it. I think it's a myth. I'm in my 5th year of college, and I've heard similar stories throughout the years (even from a friend who used to say they hated being at home). You're not alone in where you're at in the 'moving out' process, and thinking about the simpler times in life.

If you're desperate to try something on your own, ask yourself, what would they do for you if you were living at home? If I was sick, my mother would make this soup and i'd drink orange juice. I started doing that for myself after I moved out. It helped me gain independence mentally I think. Try doing what they might do with you on your own.

Whatever you decide, you got this! 💙
