Advice and/or Insight (Ex Bestie)
Hey, for context, I am an autistic 35 year old woman.
Anyway, when I was 25 I met this girl at a job where we both worked. We had a lot in common, and became really close. We were best friends. I have a hard time making friends because I tend to be very introverted, but I really valued this friendship. Not long after this I began a relationship with a man I met on a dating app. Things got very serious, and it wasn't too long before I moved in with him, and got engaged.
We started planning our wedding, and of course I invited my bestie. We weren't doing the traditional wedding party with bridesmaids, and groomsmen, but I still wanted her to be a part of my special day, and she seemed really supportive. She said she would definitely attend.
My wedding day came and went, and I hadn't noticed her absence until the morning after, while we were driving to our honeymoon destination. I texted her immediately, and I asked her why she hadn't shown up to the wedding ceremony or the reception. She told me that since I had become involved with my husband, she felt that I was leaving her behind, and I wasn't prioritizing her anymore. If I had done this, I hadn't meant to do it intentionally, but I was pretty surprised by her response. She had never indicated to me how she felt. She should have said something sooner, but after this our friendship couldn't recover. We drifted apart and became acquaintances that barely interacted with one another.
About a year ago, I started talking to her again. I thought I missed her, but what I really missed was the connection. I missed having a close female friend to talk to and hang out with. We rekindled our relationship, and talked often. We even saw each other in person a few times, and she met my son. It wasn't long before I started to realize that she hadn't changed or matured very much. I forgot to mention above that she can tend to be very self centered.
I ceased contact once again, but I still kept her on my socials. I thought I was being nice, and I didn't see an issue with it. I hardly use my social media accounts. She was not okay with my decision, but she respected the boundary. Now she is getting married. I happened to see a post about it online, and when I saw the date I was very surprised. My ex best friend is getting married on my birthday.
Look, I get it. I don't own the rights to the day just because I was born. She can get married whenever she wants to get married. I just don't understand why she would choose that particular day. It has no significance to her, or to her relationship with her fiancé. I know I sound like a selfish brat, but this really got to me. She knows when my birthday is. On impulse, I decided to text her and ask.
She told me flat out that it wasn't a mistake. From there I told her it was weird to pick that day, and she disagreed. The conversation ended with her blocking me. Later on I realized that I had done wrong by texting her. I should have unfollowed her on everything and moved on with my life. Why did I care what she did anymore? We weren't friends. Our friendship ended the day she didn't come to my wedding. I'm obviously not invited to her wedding, and I wouldn't go even if I was.
I did try to send her a sincere apology, but I don't think she got it. I don't want to mend the friendship or anything, I just didn't want it to end it this way.
I tried to ask for unbiased opinions on another online forum, and I explained the situation somewhat poorly. A few people were very understanding and supportive, others were not.
I hope I explained myself better here! I had to edit a lot out because it was preventing me from posting.
I understand being irked by that. It may be that since you ceased contact with her she decided that she wasn't going to celebrate your birthday with you.
