Forcing it

Hello, new here and just venting! I have always had a hard to time to make friends. My circle is extremely tiny, literally my best friend only. I am sarcastic a lot and if I sense that you won’t understand my joke or just get my sense of humor, then I will almost act fake and not be able to be my real self. Even making small talk with people is so challenging for me and I don’t know why. If I have the smallest feeling about anything, then I’ll just keep it civil and I won’t ever reach out to hang out or do anything. I find this extremely weird because I can talk to people and be nice but sometimes it feels like it’s being forced idk why…

Faking it is exhausting to me. I too used to do that; I still have friends who still do.  Maybe it is hard because we read too much into how we are perceived or are careful if we do not know if some will get our sarcasm or jokes.

A small reaction or response we are not sure of makes us resort to civil surface level talk and no we chose not to purposely reach out of hang out with that person.   I found my misreading reactions over their responses made me assume they did not like me or get me.  I find I can act fake and have superficial friends or I can be myself and know not everyone will like or get me.
