What’s your favorite example of friendship? In books, movies, on 7Cups, in your IRL life? What friendship do you aspire to be like?

@jesusredeemedme2425

I personally think the idea of friendships shown in TV and movies is damaging to some people because they never show the real struggle of having same time and money to do all the things they portray.   People get frustrated or upset that real life friendship may not be lifelong etc. they may be fleeting for example when you both work together or go to school etc.  people move and lives take other paths.

I always try to be friends while the situation exists ... when it ends... I wish them well and move on...

The reward is when I have run into past work friends and they MANY years later remember some advice or thing I shared with them.    One lady told me that her and her spouse remember me when they hear something odd or funny they think I would enjoy (not seen her in 10 years) ...........  that is a feeling you cannot explain or replicate.... just knowing you made a lasting impression.

@jesusredeemedme2425 it's a little bit different kind of answer, but I extremely loved Sándor Márai's Embers.

Major spoilers ahead, skip to the segment below the line if you plan to read: the main character is an old general, who is visited by a just as old friend to discuss something that happened between them in the past. They talk about the day where all went wrong, and reflect on what is even friendship. In the end of their lives, they are both seeking closure to what happened. (The friend had an affair with the generals wife, they made a plan to make a "hunting accident", and run away together, but the friend could not go through with it and changed his mind last minute and instead run away. They haven't talked since, and the general have separated from his wife who died a few years later.)

Now, no, I don't want a friend who will plot to get rid of me and run away with my husband lol. What deeply touched me in the book is something different. How even tho life made these two men enemies, they still decided to meet, discuss what went wrong and give each other closures, doing it fully calm and with respect, what I deeply value. The general recounts what happened, while also acknowledging how even through the betrayal, his friend loved him too much to go through with the plan.

I had a similar thing happen to me before, on a much much smaller scale, as elementary school drama, where my friend gradually replaced me in front of my own eyes and I let her, because I wanted her to be happy. But she started to be very mean to me and treat me like garbage. When I finally made up the courage to sit down and have a tough conversation where I expressed how we grew apart and if we can fix it, I only got told people change.

So what I aspire to be is to stay human, even if things get tough and bad choices happen. He could have taken his friends life in both figurative and literal sense, yet he chose not to do it in the end. He never confirms or denies the generals words, but they still have a drink for goodbye. I aspire to proper closures and mutual respect, even if life does it's things and things can't go back to how they used to be anymore, I still want to acknowledge the good time we had, have the courage for tough conversation, understand their feelings and motives, my own faults in the mix and don't betray back even if they betrayed me. And even when things get tough, lift my tea for a dignified goodbye.
