North Carolina beach house collapses dramatically into sea
The home on a beach of North Carolina’s Outer Banks leaned against the surf before the pilings below it sagged, then gave way, toppling the entire structure into the sea.
A beachgoer posted video of the collapse on *** on 16 August. “A Rodanthe NC house was consumed by the ocean right in front of me!” the caption read.
The National Park Service said the home collapse was the seventh to happen in Rodanthe in four years, and warned visitors to stay away from beaches near the Cape Hatteras national seashore.
Public entry was closed from Rodanthe to Jug Handle Bridge as debris from the collapse washed ashore, bringing jagged pieces of metal and wood planks riddled with nails on to the beaches.
Officials said many other homes in the Rodanthe area appeared to have sustained damages: “Dangerous debris may be present on the beach and in the water for more than a dozen miles.”
An alert from the park service warned of “exposed hazards, such as house-related septic systems, wires, pipes and broken concrete parking pads”.
The beach house, which had been an active vacation rental until earlier this summer, was unoccupied and no injuries were reported in the collapse. The property is owned by a couple from Hershey, Pennsylvania.
The collapse was probably caused by increased ocean swells due to Hurricane Ernesto, which made landfall in Bermuda early on Saturday, bringing winds of 85mph and waves exceeding 35ft (10.5 metres), and the result of beach erosion – a normal part of beach living that has worsened due to rising sea levels linked to the climate crisis, experts say.

@jesusredeemedme2425 😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮 thank God noone was hurt, and precautions were already taken at the beach, and vacation home. I've heard of this sort of thing before, it's quite scary. But the home owners won't really be able to sell property so close to the cliffs edge anymore🙁

Sunday's massive rainfall may have been most in Connecticut history
The National Weather Service is looking at the possibility that Sunday's historic rain event set a record for the most rainfall ever in Connecticut over a 24-hour period.
A State Climate Extremes Committee, including representatives from the National Weather Service in New York and National Weather Service climate experts will be reviewing two 24-hour rainfall measurements from Sunday.
The two totals were reported by private home weather stations in Oxford. One measured 14.83" of rain and the other measured 13.5", according to the National Weather Service.
The existing record is 12.77" of rainfall was set on August 19, 1955 from Hurricane Diane, almost 69 years ago to the day of Sunday's storm.
The NWS experts will examine the home weather stations at both locations to determine if they are in compliance with National Weather Service measurement guidelines and specifications.
The committee will release its findings after reviewing all the evidence. The NWS said that typically takes two to four weeks.

Answer and Explanation: One inch of rain means that the rain that fell in a single geographic location would sit one-inch deep on top of the ground, if it were not absorbed into the earth or if it did not run downhill. A good way to picture this is to imagine a square pan set out on perfectly level ground.

More than 28% of Americans are now searching for a new job — the highest rate in a decade
A new labor market survey shows Americans have rarely felt more in need of new job opportunities — an indication of a more negative outlook about the economy despite other data that suggests a more stable picture.
The New York Federal Reserve's latest poll of consumers found 28.4% of respondents were looking for a job — the highest reading since March 2014 and up from 19.4% a year ago. That includes both individuals already out of a job and ones currently employed but seeking new roles.
The readings, from the New York Fed's thrice-annual Survey of Consumer Expectations Labor Market Survey, add to evidence that the U.S. economic outlook is worsening, even as some economists dial back their odds of a recession. While the unemployment rate remains relatively low at 4.3%, it is up from its post-pandemic low of 3.5%.
After a period of booming post-pandemic growth — tempered by surging inflation — signs continue to mount that the U.S. economy is entering a significantly softer period.
"The vibes have gotten worse," said Guy Berger, director of economic research at the Burning Glass Institute, a labor research group.
He said the survey likely reflects respondents' hearing about or having someone in their social network who's experienced difficulty finding work.
"It's not like people should be panicked — this is not like 2008, or Covid — but, given an ordinary person’s balance of risks, it probably is a little higher," Berger said.
Expectations of losing one’s job also hit a record, the new survey found: The average expected likelihood of becoming unemployed rose to 4.4%, up from 3.9% a year ago and the highest level ever recorded for the survey, which goes back to 2014.
Despite those increasingly worrisome datapoints, economic forecasters say a full-blown recession, commonly defined as two-consecutive quarters of negative growth, remains unlikely.
Berger noted that layoffs remain low, and that the percentage of the population aged 25 to 54 who is employed, at 80.9%, remains at all-time highs. Overall labor force participation, or the share of the adult population that is employed or unemployed, has been stable for the past year at just under 63%. And the rate of job openings to positions remains above pre-pandemic highs at 4.9%.

Trinidad is redrawing its coat of arms to remove Columbus’ three famous ships
Officials in Trinidad and Tobago are redrawing the island’s coat of arms for the first time since its creation in 1962 to remove references to European colonization in a move that many are celebrating.
Christopher Columbus’ three ships – the Pinta, the Niña and the Santa María – will be replaced with the steelpan, a popular percussion instrument that originated in the eastern Caribbean island.
Prime Minister Keith Rowley made the announcement on Sunday to a standing ovation, saying the coat of arms would be reconfigured before late September.
“That should signal that we are on our way to removing the colonial vestiges that we have in our constitution,” he said.
The current coat of arms also features hummingbirds, a palm tree and a scarlet ibis, Trinidad’s national bird.
Rowley’s announcement comes roughly a week before Trinidad and Tobago is scheduled to hold a public hearing on whether certain statues, signs and monuments should be removed.
The upcoming change is part of a worldwide movement that aims to eradicate symbols of the colonial era, with statues of Columbus removed or toppled across the US in recent years.
Columbus arrived in Trinidad and Tobago in 1498.

A gold bar is now worth $1 million
The price of a bar of gold is worth a million dollars for the first time, thanks to soaring prices for the precious metal.
The price of spot gold reached more than $2,500 per troy ounce Friday, hitting a record high. The average gold bar weighs 400 troy ounces – which, when you do the math, hits a million dollars.
Bloomberg News first reported the gold bar price.
Spot gold prices have shot up more than 20% year to date. Higher gold prices can be a sign that investors expect the Federal Reserve to cut its benchmark interest rate soon. Central banks led by China are also buying up gold to ease reliance on US dollars.
Central banks – and investors – see the precious metal as a long-term, reliable store of value during periods of economic turmoil. That’s because when interest rates fall, gold prices tend to rise, as bullion becomes more appealing than bonds.
Investors also regard gold as a hedge against inflation, betting bullion will retain its value when prices rise.
Of course, not every gold bar weighs exactly 400 ounces. And the United States Gold Bureau said that gold bars are usually traded internationally by central banks and bullion dealers, not by individual people.

The rarity of diamonds comes from the amount of good, gem quality stones. The bigger, more clear, least amount of color = rare. So long story short, good diamonds are hard to come by, which in turn means a bigger price tag.
Compared to other gemstones, diamonds are actually quite plentiful. However, gem quality diamonds (meaning they are nice and sparkly and pretty) are a little more rare. The majority of diamonds mined are an ugly color, or so included that they’d stand no chance to adorn your finger. These are called “industrial grade”, meaning they usually end up being ground up into diamond dust and used in tools and manufacturing.

The next world’s tallest building could be a 3,000-feet-high battery
Humans have long built towering structures to showcase the power of empires, rulers, religions and corporations. Today, more tall buildings are popping up than ever before. But skyscrapers could soon have a new purpose: storing renewable energy.
One of the biggest hurdles to a power grid dominated by clean energy is the intermittency of some renewable sources. Sometimes clouds roll in when solar energy is needed, or the wind stops blowing, and turbines can’t generate power. Other times, the sun and wind produce more electricity than is required.
Storage is crucial for balancing generation and consumption. A combination of technologies — from various forms of batteries to other energy storage methods — will likely be necessary to increase capacity.
Enter battery skyscrapers. At the end of May, Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM), the architecture and engineering firm behind some of the world’s tallest buildings, announced a partnership with the energy storage company Energy Vault to develop new gravity energy storage solutions.
That includes a design for a skyscraper that would use a motor powered by electricity from the grid to elevate giant blocks when energy demand is low. These blocks would store the electricity as “potential” energy. When there is demand, the blocks would be lowered, releasing the energy, which would be converted into electricity.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa’s capital city is establishing a new pecking order for backyard chickens and roosters after some of their diehard fans paraded around City Hall with some of their flocks on Monday.
City Manager Scott Sanders said in a statement issued Friday evening that he thinks the city can find a way to amend the proposed restrictions so they will “better serve the whole community,” including chicken owners. The proposal that got preliminary approval from the city council would have cut the number of birds allowed from 30 to 12 and ban the roosters that are disturbing the peace in some neighborhoods.
Chicken parade organizer Ed Fallon said the city seemed to be overreacting to a total of three complaints about chickens that were registered between the start of 2020 and June 2024. A small group of people holding chickens came out Monday to march from the Statehouse to City Hall.
Sanders said he asked Assistant City Manager Malcolm Hankins to draft an amendment that will be broadly accepted.
“After listening to Council Member concerns at the July 22 Council meeting, we believe there is a better path forward for an amendment to this ordinance at a later date,” Hankins said in the release.
The new rules should allow roosters but require the licensing of chickens and set up a process for dealing with nuisance animals that can’t contain their ***-a-doodle-dos.
