Heyhey wonderful subscribers of the General Support community! Welcome to our first post surrounding Mental Illnesses week as part of Mental Health Awareness Month.

The topic of this post is going to be “What is a mental illness?”

Below, you can find some information on what a mental illness is and maybe find out some information you didn't know before! <3

Mental illnesses are health conditions, just like any physical problem you may have, and involve changes in your emotions, the way you behave in certain situations, and even the way you think on a day-to-day basis. However, it is also very important to note that having poor mental health during a set period of time does not mean a person has a mental illness. Mental illness has always been a touchy subject for a lot of people, this is often due to the fact that although some mental illnesses may appear similar on the surface, underneath the surface no two disorders are the same; and of course, not everyone is prepared to discuss any mental illnesses they may have.

Some statistics I found online for a given year:

  • Nearly 1 in 5 of U.S adults experience some form of mental illness

  • 1 in 24 of U.S adults have a serious mental illness

  • 1 in 12 U.S adults have a mental health disorder linked to substance misuse

I hope this post was useful for you and you found out something new, and if not I hope you find that the post is accurate! Feel free to see below a few questions relating to this topic and you can answer in a reply to this thread. <3

@SkylarListens

This is a great post. I think more people should be aware that no 2 disorders are the same when it comes to the people living with it. I think that's important to understand if you want to help.

Too often mental health is generalised.
