Another tornado watch

I'm under another tornado watch until 3am. I don't have a job yet so I'm lucky to be able to stay awake and stay prepared. But how do you do it who live under the threat of tornado warnings so often? How do you sleep at night? How do you get ready and go to work and leave your beloved pet at home? I am really asking these questions, because I will have a job soon and need to know how to handle living under the threat of a tornado. Thanks.

As you know, where I live we have hurricane season. My first couple years here it always made me nervous...now I'm always at least half-prepped at any given time. But not being employed can definitely put a crimp in one's emergency readiness, for sure.

Take advantages of whatever local resources there are. If you are poor enough you could qualify for assistance with food expenses; there may even be local charities for that purpose. If you can, get ahold of several glass gallon jugs, wash them out very well, then fill them with potable water. Put in one tiny drop of bleach into each jug also if you plan on storing the water for an extended period. I would post more tips but right now I'm having a flareup & can't really think of any...uuuggghhh

When you've done all you can, the best thing to do is to take deep breaths, lay back & wait for it. These days I do not worry about hurricanes, as worrying will not change the path of any storm coming off the gulf or from the Atlantic. What will happen will happen...there is no point in worrying about what you cannot control.

@slowdecline48

Hi, Dec,

Thanks for the good advice. Why the bleach in the water? That's a good tip to buy water. I had forgotten about that. I'm putting it on my grocery list.

I'm trying to think of how I can stay half prepped. When I was in the republic, I packed a lot more when a hurricane was coming. Here I've cut that down drastically, but still I've had to prep twice in 1.5 months, due to tornado threat. I'm already tired of it. lol I guess I've got an idea. Change of clothes in a bag at the ready. Important papers in same bag.

Thanks. You've given me some good ideas.

Tree -

The bleach is only if you plan to store the water for an extended period. Weird microorganisms will eventually grow in it otherwise, no matter how clean your vessel & water are originally. (Remember, "life finds a way") One drop of bleach per gallon, or per 1.5 gallons, won't hurt you at all but should keep your water drinkable for a year or so.

If you plan to drink it all up in a week or two then of course you don't have to add anything. I do try to rotate my water supply that way. After I drink up one jug I wash it out, refill it & add it to the supply--& then open the next one. That way none of my water ever sits for too long. I do the same thing with canned foods, also.

@purpleTree4652 Hi, I know how it can feel. During COVID, I was under quarantine for 21 days. I know how hard it is to be prepared for something that you don't know the future of. Personally, I have never had a tornado warning, so I can't really speak from experience. But being under quarantine for COVID made me realize there are so many things that is out of our control, and there's nothing we can really do about it, but what we can do is just to make sure that our mentality is at peak and ready to take on whatever curve ball the world is going to throw towards us, and everything will eventually workout in the best way that it can be. I'd say just pack an emergency kit and know where to hide to keep yourself safe is the best way anyone can prepare for a tornado
