Custody battle
For the past eleven years, my dad and I have been estranged, our relationship hanging by a thread of lost time and unspoken words. But two weeks ago, on a whim, I decided to reach out to him using my friend's *** account. The moment he replied, it felt like a spark reignited—an instant connection, as if that bond we once shared had never truly been severed. It was surreal to realize that despite the years apart, we still had so much in common, and the warmth between us was palpable, reminding me of the laughter and moments we used to share. My current living situation is quite challenging. While it's not the worst possible scenario, it certainly leaves much to be desired. After careful consideration, I decided to ask him to pursue custody. I believe it would provide a more stable and supportive environment for us. I haven't shared any of this with my mom yet, as I'm unsure how she would react or if it would complicate matters further. I wrote my dad a heartfelt letter expressing my feelings about living with him, but when my mom found it, she erupted in anger. She accused me of being disloyal, emphasizing that she had been the one raising me for the past 15 years without him. It’s ironic because, throughout that time, she had actually forced us apart. When my dad was granted visitation rights, instead of letting us build a relationship, she took me down to Florida to escape. My dad tried to visit us, but she went silent on him, completely ghosting him.
She had numerous opportunities to let him back into my life, but she was so fixated on her husband being my father figure that she effectively cut my dad out of the picture, even violating court orders in the process. For years, my dad didn’t reach out to me because he was unsure if I even knew he existed, which I didn’t until I was about nine years old. Unfortunately, he didn’t know that I was completely in the dark about him. Instead, he and my little sister were left to watch me from a distance, tracking my mom’s movements through her *** and driving past my grandparents' house. They even contacted an old teacher of mine in an attempt to find out how I was doing. It’s a complicated situation filled with pain and misunderstandings, and I'm left grappling with the consequences of these choices.
He has a meeting scheduled with his attorney tomorrow, and I can’t shake the feeling that my mom is going to leverage the fact that he hasn't reached out in years against him. It’s likely she’ll argue that his silence shows a lack of interest or care, which could be a strong point in her favor. I just hope he’s prepared to counter that narrative, especially since the circumstances of his absence were complicated and not entirely within his control. It’s difficult to watch this unfold, knowing the emotional weight it carries for both of them.
I'm feeling really uncertain about what to do in this situation. If he doesn’t win in court, I fear the consequences will be significant. I worry that my stepdad and mom will treat me poorly, and that could make life at home very uncomfortable. The thought of facing their disappointment and anger is daunting, and I don’t know how I’ll cope with it. It feels like I’m caught in the middle, and I just want to find a way to navigate this without adding more stress to an already difficult situation.

It sounds like you’ve made a brave decision to reach out to your dad after all these years, and that connection you felt when he responded is powerful. It’s clear that you have a strong desire to rebuild that relationship, and I think it’s important to honor that. But I also understand how complicated it must feel when your mom’s reaction is full of anger and hurt, especially since she was so protective of her relationship with your stepdad and kept your dad out of the picture for so long. It seems like there’s a lot of pain and unresolved issues between your mom and dad, which have understandably affected how you see your role in all of this. Being caught between two conflicting sides, especially when you want a better and more supportive environment for yourself, can feel isolating. You’re doing your best in a really tough situation, and it’s okay to not have all the answers right now. I’m here if you need someone to talk to .
