Emotional abuse

My mother is extremely narcissistic and emotionally abusive, though I would not say it's extremely bad, but it does and has damaged me. It used to be more than just emotional abuse. She argues with me a lot, yells, insults, or even just dirty looks. And she is not supportive one bit. She's only ever happy with me if I do something that makes her seem like a good parent, such as me receiving rewards or praise or good grades. I've experienced what emotional abuse does to a child early before I even knew what it was because I watched my older brother be treated so horribly and grow up to become distant, quiet, and seeking an escape through the Internet. He was really smart, gifted too, and he went to college for a year, but dropped out because he was dealing with mental health. My mother has never let him live that down. I feel very bad to say the least. I don't want to be fall down the same path he did because of her. I used to not talk back at all; I used to just let her say things to me. And that was horrible because i was just a child with a developing brain. I now talk back sometimes, not to make things worse but to try to get something through her that says she's in the wrong– but it never works. I also got very tired of letting her say insensitive and rude things to me, and to my siblings. I stand up for them when I can, and that really bothers her. She asks me if I'm mental and says rude things about how I don't have the right mental capacity or capabilities, even though I do. She only does those things to make me seem small, dumb, and unimportant. I'd hate to say it does, but sometimes it really, really does. And my brother tells me not to let her get to me, but it's hard to when it's so often. I'm a very kind, quiet person who never judges anyone, but I'm also very sensitive. Yelling makes me upset, and you can only imagine how constant yelling or insults affects me. I wish I could just not let it get to me, but i haven't found a way to not let it. This isn't a new thing either; she has always been this way. I've dealt with it for a while now, but when I'm dealing with so much it all builds up until it has to fall. I tell myself it'll be okay and one day she won't be able to bring me down, and I guess that's what keeps me going– knowing my future will have better days because I know my worth is more than what she tries to make me believe.

@GracieBunn13

I'm sorry your mother is so cruel.

Cold.

Unfeeling.

Mother's should be kind, supportive and loving, never belittling.

I hope you do know, that nothing she says about you, is true!

You and your siblings deserved better.

None of us are perfect and we all make mistakes but she's never apologised, taken accountability or tried to be better 💜

@GracieBunn13 I feel this to my core. I’m 36 with the emotional intelligence of a toddler because of a narcissistic mother and her abuse. It really really sucks when you get treated like a show pony, the love that should be unconditional has conditions, the lack of safety. Trying to be vulnerable and talk to them about how they hurt you only to have them turn it back on you… it hurts, and knowing that they may never acknowledge or try to repair hurts even more. Thank you for sharing this. We might not have any support from our moms but we can support each other.

I am so deeply sorry for you have had to endure

It is amazing that you have been able to start speaking up about her bad treatment towards you and your siblings. That is so huge, seriously

And I’m glad you have the hope of the Future to help you keep going. You ARE worth more than how she treats you! And all your feelings are valid. What she is doing to you and others is horrible. No one should be treated that way, least of all a child. To grow up in that environment and be as intelligent and articulate and emotionally aware as you are is so incredible. Seriously.

I can’t imagine what you’ve been through and how she has made you and others feel 💔

I’m glad you have found this app and I hope you are able to use it as a tool to help cope and manage with the unfair things she does and says

Sending you Strength and good Energy!

🌸✨

I totally understand how you feel. It seems to me that most people’s minds are still underdeveloped even though their bodies have fully matured. That’s why so many parents are mentally unwell, and such families are never happy. My mom is extremely self-centered—she even suggested sitting at a separate table from me on my birthday just to save money!? Most of the time, we don’t see eye to eye, and all we do is fight endlessly. But later, I learned to let her words go in one ear and out the other. I don’t dwell on the painful stuff and try my best not to let her mood affect mine. I know it’s hard—being in this environment yet having to pretend you’re not. At the very least, I hope you can hold on until you can move out on your own.

@GracieBunn13, mine was going to literally kill me, indirectly. I had a tumor which was rare and a surgeon was planning a surgery...the night before the surgery, she went to threaten him. I didn't know till I went out of the hospital and the surgeon told me it was a successful surgery to find out later that the pain is still there and I am not feeling well. Talking later to the surgeon, he told me that he didn't remove it. When I was back home and confronted her, she said it doesn't matter and I should give up on the surgery..later on, i managed to find a surgeon abroad and it was my first time to travel abroad, she didn't agree to travel with me...I had the surgery and I stayed at the hospital alone for two weeks. I stayed abroad for two months to make sure that I am feeling better...I do follow ups and more surgeries abroad and each time I still travel alone........

As others have said, it sucks because this is the person who brought you into this world, should be the most cherished relationship, and you're forced to have to go through that separation/detachment process.

You are more than the abuse you're going through.
