Hello, so its interesting I think. Im schizoaffective disorder with history of alcohol, cigarettes, and drugs (mostly pot). Have not drank any alcohol in 8 years, or smoked anything in 13 (probably with help from welbutrin, which was discontinued 6 months ago. Anyways, my therapist who is a licensed AODA counselor (thats not why I see her) Understands that basically I have no friends I hang out with.  I have some from HS and such on *** only.   My new Case worker in the Community Support Program, thinks Im too strick on possible future friends, saying that I basically shouldn't mind if the drink and such just leave the situation if its in my prescence.    My Therapist and myself think this is "crazy talk". I have to see this particular case manager for a while, how do I make it clear I dont want people who use in my life? its too much temptation?

@Christo677

people who have not seen things from the addicts perspective do not see it....that it is everywhere go out to dinner offered a cocktail / on planes or other events like sports or concerts etc.

Although i do feel you will encounter people in life who smoke or drink and perhaps learning to slowly accept  that fact  and trying to avoid all forever is not a feasible workable situation.....  perhaps that is what your case worker is thinking...

When my spouse who is an alcoholic was in beginning of recovery i tried to avoid all ...it was very hard and i looked crazy actually yelled at waiter whom did not take NO for a final answer to wanting something from the bar....   That is when i realized the decision to drink is his......... i could not control exposure unless i limited our world to that of a hermits.

 Do you feel your will could not overcome peer pressure if they drank around you?   after 8 years of sobriety.....

 perhaps their suggestion was not meant as counterproductive but a realistic view of limits you are placing  on friendships and life.
