Grieving a friendship

User Profile: Felingina

Hi,

This is my first time posting here and I'm still learning my way around 7cups. Not sure if this is the right place for it, but I've been trying to grieve a friendship I thought I had and it's been a lot more difficult than I thought. Can I talk to someone about this that would feel comfortable? I just don't want to be a burden to anyone.

@jesusredeemedme2425

I should preface this by saying I have anxiety, depression, and trauma.

A couple weeks ago, I had a mental breakdown while messaging with my online friend. The conversation started out fine, I asked her what times would be best to message her so we could chat. Though, I was feeling a little anxious before talking to her and I was telling her some of my fears about talking to people after asking when is best to message. She tried to reassure me and encourage me to talk to others in the *** group we're in. But I kept getting more distressed and kept telling her about my fears, how I feel about myself, and my previous experiences. Basically I just let it all out. That's when she sent me a long message that left me feeling really hurt, confused, and judged. Her message made me feel like I was being told my struggles are my fault, that I'm not trying, that I don't want to try, that I'm willingly punishing myself, and I felt pressured to do things I don't feel comfortable or safe doing. Then she ended her message by saying she cares, that I'm worth fighting for, and that I deserve to be loved and cared for. Last week, I decided to be honest about how her message made me feel even though I was terrified about being honest. She apologized numerous times, but told me that it's too much for her. That when we started talking, it was about a breakup, then turned into a lot more than she is comfortable or qualified to handle. She also told me that she has a lot on her plate and she can't be that friend who is there for me daily. But she says we're still friends and that she'll message me occasionally. While she was kind and apologetic, I can't help being upset about everything. I thought it was safe to open up to her about my struggles. She told me before that she's not qualified for mental health stuff, but I thought she meant she's not able to be my therapist. I wasn't asking her to be my therapist, just to help and support me as a friend; to help on a personal level, not professional. I also thought it was okay to message her daily because she told me to message her whenever and she would get back to me when she got a chance and that she has 2 friends who message her often. And I only messaged her daily because I was hoping there would be a day where we could chat like we'd done before even if it was only for a few minutes. I didn't know either things overwhelmed her, she didn't tell me before. And looking back at previous messages, I didn't get the impression that I was overwhelming her. I also didn't know our friendship was supposed to stay really light and casual. It feels like I was just supposed to have her help with my breakup and then that was it. I'm fine with a lighter friendship, but I wasn't explicitly told that sooner and I really wish she had been more upfront about things before it was too late and I unintentionally overwhelmed her. And even though she says she thinks fondly of me and will message me occasionally, I feel like deep down, she probably does think I'm not trying and that I'm a burden and probably won't message me again. I've been trying to grieve this friendship, but it's been harder than I thought and I can't help blaming myself. I feel like I ruined this friendship and I don't particularly want to try to make other friends for fear of overwhelming others. I didn't mean to be too much for her, I thought it was safe to be vulnerable with her and that it was okay to message her daily. She even told me to be vulnerable and let others in, but then when I was vulnerable with her, it was too much. It's all so confusing and a lot to deal with.

@Felingina I'm sorry you're feeling this way, you're not alone 🤍 and the fact that you feel so much, for her being overwhelmed, means you care. You don't have to deal with everything by yourself, and I'm glad you're here 🥰 Sending lots of love to you! ❤️❤️

@fossilfellow

Thank you so much! That really means a lot! ❤️

Kind of wish I didn't feel and care so much, though. 😅 Makes it really difficult to move on from this.

Do had a friend who was exactly the same. She was great and supportive when I was dealing with stuff… Then out of the blue, no warning, she said she basically didn’t wanna deal with me anymore, or so it felt at least. She dumped me like a hot potato with absolutely no warning.

You’re better off without her. Trust me. Those kinds of friends suck. They’re not real friends.

*hugs*

I'm so sorry you went through something similar. 🫂 It truly hurts and sucks when you think you have friends who will stick with you, but then they don't.

It's difficult because I don't think my "friend" is a bad person, she's been kind and quite a few people love her in our group chat, but I really wish she had been a lot clearer about things from the beginning. I just feel like I shouldn't be upset about this because she says we're still friends and her hurting me was unintentional. Yet, she told me that my message about being honest about my feelings is "proof she's not qualified." She's not qualified to support me... as a friend? She was also fixated on not having the correct words to comfort me and that a therapist would be more suited. I wasn't asking her to have the "correct words," just to virtually hold me in my pain, even if she didn't know what to say. She's also told me before she's a fixer, so it seems like because she couldn't immediately fix my problems and that my problems are more complicated, she just tossed me aside. And I wasn't always talking about my struggles with her, we talked about other things and I wanted to know more about her and what she's been up to, stuff I assume one would talk about with a friend, but that ended up being too much. But then she also thinks fondly of me, thinks I'm a sweetheart, doesn't think anything bad about me. I just... I don't know. It's hard to know what's true and what's not when there's been so many mixed messages. I keep trying to tell myself that she's not the friend I need, but it doesn't get rid of the pain, self-blame, and doubt. And I miss her and the friendship I thought we had. I wanted a deeper, closer friendship with her, but it feels like I'm not allowed to have that, like I'm an exception. And it really hurts and sucks that she's probably going about her life like nothing has changed while I'm left here grieving and in pain, trying to figure out where I went wrong. And if she ever does reach out to me when it just happens to be convenient for her, I have no idea how I'm going to respond to her because I don't know what's okay to do or talk about anymore. I feel like I can't even reach out to her, I just have to wait and hope that she has the capacity for me, if she ever does. It just hurts so much and I wish it didn't. And it's ironic because she recommended 7cups to me for my issues and here I am talking about my friendship with her.

It’s like we have the same friend or something O.O Because you’re describing my experience exactly…

Qualified to love someone? Yeah, exactly. If you exist, you can love someone. Even through the hard stuff. <3 Correct words and fixing unneeded. Just love. That gets us through that one anguished moment and keeps us going. <3

Don’t reach out to her. Grow other relationships. Make friends here. Bloom and thrive without her <3

@Felingina

I'm sorry you are going through so much 💕💜 Sending you hugs and I genuinely think your friend loves and cares for you and is a good person, she was there for you, but sometimes we don't know what to say or how to help and we don't want to say the wrong thing 💕💜

@Felingina I feel like there are some amazing group chats. Yeah, even if nobody is here for the same reasons besides self improvement, getting the advantage of a variety of perspectives can show you how to approach yourself from new angles. Also, if you end up resonating with someone in those forums to be a conifiant then all the better. There are also those listener chats on here one on one that I've appreciated when I have no one else.
