I Can’t Hang an Under Construction Sign On My Face!
For all of those that have been told to “work on yourself”, for how long must someone work on themselves?
I can’t walk around with an under construction sign on my face…
Maybe I’m odd but I believe life is about a constant state of growth therefore one must always be striving to better themselves.
But this constant barrage of the “Work on Yourself” mantra is inherently harmful. To me it creates the thought that the person who is always a work in progress is also always an unfinished individual.
I counter the argument with people that are more actualized who still don’t feel complete.
Where does one draw the line and say they’ve done most of the work?
Who is the arbiter of progress?
What is this obsession with achievements for achievements sake and not personal growth?
And should one be denied love because they are “under construction“?
@emara I think it's better to view it as "I'm adding new features", rather than saying "I'm under construction". As you said, the under construction sign feels like someone is always in the process of becoming whole, suggesting that they are incomplete.
We can be a house that is beautiful, cozy and full of love, and still have room for new additions. Everything requires maintenance and repair over time and it's just part of growth<3 We deserve love no matter what sign we choose to wear.
I think it's not about when to stop but knowing when to pause, reflect and appreciate how far we've come. Life is about continuous growth but that doesn't mean we can't feel whole or loved exactly as we are now. Being whole isn't about being perfect or finished, it's about embracing who we are in this moment while remaining open to the journey ahead.
Even the greatest inventors and scientists are still discovering and experimenting with things long after the discovery has been made. Even after they achieve the thing, they are still working on it.
