New DuoLingo Course!

I just discovered that DuoLingo has a new chess course! <3
They also have math and music, along with TONS of language courses! I’m learning German rn :)
Tell me about your DuoLingo experiences! What courses are you taking? What’s your current streak? Do you have friend streaks? Do you use streak freezes often or not at all? What language has been easiest or hardest for you? Do you use lingots (gems), or collect them?
@jesusredeemedme2425 Ich lerne auch Deutsch! Duo is the best platform for grammar drills; although the real work takes place off the pitch imo, it's still one very useful tool. I use up those gems on doing that status uplevel thing. Didn't know about the chess.

I’m learning Spanish too. I can read Spanish pretty well, I just can’t speak it. Probably doesn’t help that I skip the speaking lessons lol
@jesusredeemedme2425 it's the option to get to Legendary starus, which you can do on completing each module. Costs 100gems, or 125 as you work through each unit. The Spanish course is very thorough on DL. Someone on YouTube did a compilation of the best DL courses, Spanish was top. I'll have to go look for that link.
What exactly does Legendary do? I never figured that out. Is it just extra XP?
@jesusredeemedme2425 you gain bonus xp, and it's an extra challenge to close out the level. I do it for the sake of completion, mainly.
@jesusredeemedme2425 meant to add, if you're finding the speaking sections of DL unengaging, can I suggest Language Transfer? Their Spanish course is fantastic for getting you to speak.
It’s more like, I never have privacy, and I feel uncomfortable listening to my own lousy pronounciation. I’ve been bullied about my Spanish pronunciation, so I just don’t really try anymore.
@jesusredeemedme2425 How are your listening skills? Very often, concerns about accent or pronunciation are very easily remedied through immersive listening, as we need to hear speech modelled both well and extensively in order to reproduce those same sounds ourselves. I'm very sorry to hear that you were bullied for your efforts - that would certainly be a deterrent to trying.
My listening skills are good on DuoLingo, but AWFUL in person! People who speak Spanish talk really fast and mix their words together, so it’s hard to distinguish each word.
@jesusredeemedme2425 I've found the only cure for that one is endless listening - picking a subject matter you enjoy, then finding a relevant podcast/YT video on it and listening over and over. Transcribing what you hear helps - at first it might be just some words then on successive listens it becomes clearer. It's a slow process, but the rewards of enjoying content in your target language are immense.
Any ideas for Spanish ones?
@jesusredeemedme2425 Radio Ambulante by NPR is very famous, and a good place to start. I don't know if Duo still has a Spanish podcast - they used to and it was very, shall we say, inspired by NPR's work, lol! For German - I like Das Wissen or anything from SWR really.

Those are on Spotify, if you search Duolingo Spanish podcasts. It looks like they have a French one too. I finished all they have for the Spanish one, learned lots of cool stuff.
I'm also learning German. Today I got up to a 200 day streak.

I've been using Duolingo on and off to learn French. Eventually their skill tree for French got WAY TOO OVERWHELMING for me and I stopped using them. However, I'm very excited to check out their Chess course.
@Lemurian51611 there's certainly a lot to take in with that French course. Let us know how the chess one is!
@DemiMondaine Will do, once I get access to it. Seems it's not on Android phones yet, or maybe just not on mine 'cause it's older (Android Pie)
No, the newer courses seem to be iPhone only.

My job gives me sporadic bursts of free time on the clock, and they have no issues with Duolingo. So, I've finished the Spanish and Italian courses, also the math and music, and I'm making decent progress on Polish and Japanese. 😅
I'm learning pretty much anything on Duolingo because... why not? 😂 I think the hardest so far is Korean. My friend is on a 375 day streak, I think I'm on 11...? There have been days where I've forgotten to log on, so the streak freezes get used. I don't use the gems typically.
