Not Feeling Optimistic

I signed up in this platform on Friday the 8th hoping to get some counseling with live sessions. The only thing I've been told to do is to journal...I've been journaling since the 8th. I know journaling is important and it is useful, but shouldn't counseling and therapy in involve more? I have problems I am trying to work through and I paid for a monthly subscription with live video...but I don't feel so optimistic here... journal for a week and we'll talk about it? Not feeling like this is helping 😢

@sympatheticBeach4477 when therapy is going the right way for you, it's ok to say what you actually want or need. If you don't tell her/him what you want to work on, then they may not be able to help you best ❤ also don't be afraid to say no I'm sorry but I need to talk to a different therapist, not all therapists will be the same. And it's ok to say tell them that. Good luck with everything sweetie ❤ hugs you tightly ❤

@sympatheticBeach4477   I get it. I cant do live sessions but I would love to talk about what's going on! I come onto 7 cups and find people who need something. I'm here for you. if you would like to, totally unload on me! I'll listen. your not burdening me at all. I've talked to some people dealing with some hefty stuff and it didn't burden me lol.

I am sorry you're feeling this way. I totally get what you're saying. I would feel the same. I journal whether I am getting therapy or not. I am not signed up for therapy. I have the basic premium only. I don't have any great advice. Just empathy.

@sympatheticBeach4477 hiii, someone on therapy here. The thing is, what you journal matters a lot. It gives you ground to maximise the benefit of therapy. The process of writing on paper is proven to be very beneficial as it lets you organise your thoughts a bit and get in some kind of throught flow. During journaling, it depends how you write your entries. You can take a lot of different approaches and writing it out will help you prepare for therapy so then, you can do a deeper dive into it. Sometimes you want to explore how something made you feel and why. Sometimes you want to see what can you do about it. Sometimes it is a practice of gratitude and positivity, depending on what you need. But let's go with the most commonly used journaling approach at therapy, the exploration of current events and their effect on you. Let's say you had an interaction with someone that you can't stop replaying in your head. So now. At therapy, the therapist would ask you how did it make you feel. Why did you react this way. What were you thinking at the moment etc. Sometimes you can answer it immediately. Sometimes you need to think. But then the harder questions come of any past negative experiences? How were your interactions with your parents when you were a child? What happened there? And these are things we usually can't answer on the spot without thinking. This journaling is supposed to let you explore the topic and problem all around and maybe even lead you down the rabbit hole of past experiences that you can then bring to therapy and discuss. But that said, if you feel It is not helping or it is something you personally don't enjoy, that's ok too. Therapy is not one size fits all, and if you don't like something, let your therapist know so they can give you something else to do. If they are not understanding of the problem, you can always search for a different therapist whose method of works is better for you 😊
