Saying What I Was Never Allowed to Say

I didn’t even plan on journaling tonight, but I guess I needed to get this out. I had therapy today, and honestly, it went better than I expected. Lori was really understanding. I was so worried that when I showed her the police report my brother’s statement she’d start seeing me differently. I was scared she’d look at me the way other people have in the past. But she didn’t. She didn’t pull away or act weird. She kept reminding me that what happened wasn’t my fault, no matter what he said. The relief I feel from actually being listened to and believed… it’s a lot. I’m not used to that. I know it’s her job, I know she gets paid to listen, but it doesn’t feel like she’s just doing her job. It feels like she genuinely cares and wants to help me, and that means so much to the girl who grew up with no one believing her or helping her.
I spent years being silenced and told not to trust people. And honestly, when your own family can sexually abuse you, it really does mess up the way you see people. It makes you feel like you can’t trust anyone. But what happened to me is my story. I get to tell who I want. And when I talk about it, I’m honest. I don’t lie about what he did. He doesn’t get to use the excuse of being a kid who “didn’t know better,” because the last time he hurt me, he was a grown adult.
I’ll never write out every detail of what he did to me  I can’t. I don’t ever want that down on paper. But I’m starting to talk about it. I’m finally letting someone in. And I’m so grateful to have someone in my corner. Someone who believes me, who listens, who doesn’t make excuses for him or tell me he changed, like that somehow fixes anything. It doesn’t. What he did will always stay with me. But at least now… it doesn’t feel like I’m facing all of it by myself anymore.

@Lindsey103 I'm new to this whole therapy thing. I found this site just today. every keeps telling me I need help so I said what the heck I'll give it a shot I guess. you post was the first one that popped up for me to read. and I already feel like maybe this site will be good for me . I relate to ur post in a lot of ways . I deal with PTSD from childhood . and weirdly it has affected me more in adulthood then when I was a child . idk if its cause I have kids of my own now . and they are at the ages of when the stuff happened to me . u hit hard when u said I know its her job and she gets paid to listen. that's why I have never reached for help . to me I am always like why do I have to pay someone to listen to me ? why can't I just have someone who actually wants to listen . its there everyday job they don't give two thoughts or feels about what I have to say . that's where I struggle . I just wanna say u helped me not feel so alone. thank u

I’m honestly so glad that me posting this helped you. It means a lot. I’m like you the things that happened to me when I was younger seem to hit even harder now. As an adult, I understand things in a way I couldn’t when I was a kid, and sometimes that makes it all feel heavier. And yeah… therapists get paid to talk to you, and for a long time that bothered me too. It made me question if anyone actually cared. Plus, you don’t always click with the first therapist you meet. I’ve been through a few, and I’ve learned you can feel the difference between someone who genuinely wants to help and someone who’s just doing their job. I really appreciate my therapist. More than she probably realizes. She’s helped me in ways I didn’t even know I needed.

@Lindsey103 I’m so happy for you, for your ability to start to let go of the gruesome behavior that was forced upon you and that was brushed off by the ones who should have defended you!! It’s such a liberating experience when you realize that it wasn’t you, wasn’t your fault in any way, and that you own your own story and can handle it however you want to! Tell whomever you choose, or don’t tell a soul, whether they get paid or end up paying you , it’s yours to tell!! And when I say they end up paying you, it’s your freedom and peace of mind they are paying you with. I think you are going to be very well off because of all you have survived thus far.

Deep breaths, Dear Lindsey, deep breaths. You got this!
