Urdu/Hindi
The two languages are similar, the distinction between the two being the script they are written in (Urdu uses Persian and Hindi Deva Nagri), which isn't a problem when using the Roman version (aka words from these languages written with the English alphabet). So, if during a conversation, someone can speak either of the languages, they can understand/communicate in the other too.

Also, your comment reminded me that another pair of lanugages with similar vocabulary but different scripts are arabic and malta, so the above applies to them too.
