Vent about dogs
I just need to get this off my chest, I know I might get backslash, for it but yesterday I fell down a rabbit hole onto a sub Reddit called dogfree. at first I believed it was talking about people who had dogs and finally was free from them but it was not. It was more or less criticizing people who owned dogs. Calling them names like muttnuts. And since I own dogs it started to make me doubt myself what if I’m one for owning a dog. Am I narcissist like they say or I need therapy. Do I gaslight myself to believe I’m right?.
I’m just trying to find out if anyone else feels the same way as I do,
@Forestryheart I'll be the first to admit that I'm a dog person (currently don't have one, lost the last one a year and half ago) I understand that some people don't like dogs... or cats....or animals in general. That's fine with me. I think a lot of it is that people don't like poorly trained and badly behaving dogs or any pet for that matter. Which is probably how some people feel about badly behaved children. (Myself included)

I think what you described is a classic example of prejudiced, hateful generalization against the entire group instead of pointing out particular misbehaviours within the group. And I am really sad some website moderations often ignore or passively support such nazi-like actions.
Unfortunately, my life experience with dogs turned me from a dog lover almost to a dog hater in less than ten years.
As a kid or a teenager I suffered seeing my beloved dogs being poisoned by a vicious neighbour, killed in accidents (some of them really messy) or euthanasied.
Early in my working years, when I used to be a postman, I was bitten by dogs several times, usually with no consequences to their owners (and this is the point I have to tell you I really hate injections...).
I was bitten by a dog in a public space, when I intuitively covered my partner from it with my body, just days before we knew my partner was pregnant.
I had to effectively sue an owner of a dog, which was barking and howling many hours a day, for months, when we had little kids.
And I was pushed off the sofa by the dogs of my friend 😜 She had four of them in a very small house.
I was attacked by dogs on the street twice within a month. And I taught my kids (who own a dog) how to recognise a trouble-making dog: one stepping like a drunken ballet dancer on ice, on a too long lash, with the owner talking through the phone and not in control.
Yes, irresponsible, immature, selfish or ignorant dog owners are a big problem now. But I believe it's still not "enough" to disregard ALL dog owners.
A different example was my cousin's amstaff. It was regarded as a dangerous breed. But it was really charmful, loving and sweet to family members, instantly making friends with a pizza guy or a FedEx courier - and at the same time still capable of scaring the s**t out of robbers (maybe even poisoned by them in a wake of prevented theft attempt).
So, yes, it's not the dog what is the problem, but SOME owners who are lacking education, basic manners or common sense.
The silver lining of my story is I started to love cats and hamsters 😊
