Why do I get so nervous

Today is my first day off between the semesters.  I wanted to go to grocery stores.  I started getting more and more nervous.  Why do I get so nervous about doing stupid, usual, things?  I only want to go to two stores.  They're close stores that I have been to 50 times.  So what is my problem?  I wish I knew.  I have felt this way for so many years.  I can't stand it.

@purpleTree4652 You must have food yes? So it seems you may have to go to the store despite your nervousness yes? And you don’t understand where the nerves are coming from, but maybe you don’t need to right now. They just make you feel really uncomfortable and you wish they were not there. Since you’re not likely to extinguish the nerves today, maybe you can distance yourself from them a bit. What I’ve learned to do is relate to my uncomfortable feelings as separate phenomena. They are not “me,” they are not happening “to me,” they are just what is in my environment. Kind of like the weather. I can’t change that it is cold outside. It is something that is separate from me and definitely not in my control. In fact, in all my years on this planet I have not been able to control the weather. I don’t take responsibility for the weather. My feelings feel more personal and to some extent I can influence them but there is no way I can declare that I shall master all emotions and only feel “the good ones.” I like eating, I don’t like pooping. I can control those to some extent but both have to happen regardless of my wishes. I’ve also learned to view my feelings as if they were a house guest. They come to visit, they stay awhile and then they go. It’s important to treat all house guests as welcome visitors - treat them with respect and kindness. Treating them this way makes their visit more pleasant for us, and our house guests usually leave sooner than they do if we fight their visit. —- it’s not the best analogy, but the point is, accept your nerves, don’t feed them with more nervousness about their presence. It’s an imperfect answer but it halfway works for me and that’s better than most everything else I tried. Hope this helps.

Wow, Life, that's a great way to look at it.  I appreciate it.  I am going to try that.  You're absolutely right about making it worse by being nervous about being nervous...if that makes sense.  Thank you for that.

@purpleTree4652 It sounds like you may have an anxiety disorder of some kind. I'm no professional shrink, though, so don't put too much stock in my words.

@slowdecline48

Yes, I do.  I have PTSD.  I am just sick of it.
