Raising a dog on a short leash and without affection is a known recipe for creating an aggressive dog, without fail. However, year after year, people are surprised by the dogs that become aggressive when raised this way. This is not about dogs.

This quote feels painfully true. We often recognize immediately when a dog has been neglected, isolated, or treated harshly, yet when people grow up under similar conditions—without affection, emotional safety, encouragement, or understanding—we sometimes expect them to simply "know better" or "be stronger."

I think many of the behaviors we criticize in others are often symptoms of wounds that were never given the chance to heal. Hurt does not excuse harmful actions, but understanding where pain comes from can help us respond with more wisdom and compassion.

What stands out to me is the line, "This is not about dogs." It reminds me that human beings, like all social creatures, need connection, care, and belonging. When those needs are consistently unmet, the consequences should not surprise us.

Perhaps one of the most important things we can do is to break that cycle—offering kindness where there was harshness, understanding where there was judgment, and support where there was neglect. Sometimes people are not difficult by nature; they are carrying the lessons of environments that never taught them how to feel safe.

A society that wants healthier adults must pay attention to how it treats its children. The outcomes we see years later rarely appear out of nowhere.
