I have my first appointment with a therapist on Thursday and I don't know where to start. I'm so overwhelmed and not sure what to say. I'm so scared that it won't help.....

Perhaps a good place to start is exactly what you wrote here:

"I don't know where to start. I'm so overwhelmed and not sure what to say. I'm so scared that it won't help....."

Some therapists begin with a series of standard questions, and you don't have to decide where to start at all. They do it for you.

I hope you'll let us know how it goes on Thursday, and I hope you can find listeners here you can talk things over with.

It's normal to be a bit afraid. Just remember this person is there to help you. You can't say the wrong thing; just be present.

Also, remember that you are the true expert on yourself. If you find after a few sessions you are not connecting, or that it isn't helping, don't be afraid to say something. They might be able to make a change... or you might just find you need someone else. It can sometimes take a few tries to find a good "fit" and you should not take a failure to click with the first person you see as a sign that you are beyond help. Be persistent - you're worth it!
