I'm not sure I agree with this - I think it's possible to truly love someone, but still not be able to stay with them for one reason or another - for instance, if I were with someone whose destructive habits were hurting me or our family, no matter how much I might love them, I would not stay and enable them or put myself or family at risk.

Hi. I think there is *some* truth to this. You might not leave them in your heart. You just can't be with them in the physical realm.
So I am 50 percent in agreement with this and 50 percent not agreeing with this saying.
I have just been relieved from a lifelong love. I am not angry that we are not together and I still love this person. But, I cannot be in his space in anyway. The relationship and any conversation are just too draining. I am at peace and rest now.
So if you ask me, I would say it is possible to stay but it would be in very distant ways.
