Rent will go up, place sucks, can't leave (unusual situation)
I live in an apartment complex that isn't too great. The current lease expires in August; should I renew it, the rent will go up to just over $1,000/mo. The place isn't worth it, to be honest. But I don't think I can leave. Here's why:
To rent a place you need an employment history. I don't have much of one for the last decade or so. I have some investments (not a lot. If I were truly wealthy I would buy a house!), & am also disabled: a chronic condition causing headaches which affects my balance & concentration, along with joint pain, depression & other stuff. To get to another (& better) place I need to work, but in the last few years the decline in my health has made it impossible. You could say I'm retired but not by choice.
I'd happily move into assisted living but I'm not poor enough. I would move to a different place but will not be accepted for reasons listed above (plus the rent would certainly be higher). Would really like to move out of where I am now, but I just don't see any other options. Am in a fix & don't know how to get out of it.

To my understanding, you don’t need employment. You just need proof that you have steady monthly income 3x time the rent.
May I ask, how much was the original/current rent?
Have you apply for low income housing/apartments? Section 8? Have you consider moving into an area or town with affordable rent?
Even if you feel they place isn’t worth it, you may need to re-sign the lease and plan one year ahead of how to move or acquire a new place next year.
You could see if friend can rent a room or if you can go into a rent a room setting until you find a better place.

As part of the averaged utilities gets tacked on each month, the actual rent varies but currently the base rate is $858. If I renew the lease, it will go up to $998/mo.
That is expensive!
You still have til august, one month to looking and ask around. If you can’t find anything within your price range, you may want to re-sign the lease and apply to low income housing around your area or contact the housing authority for further help with rental.
I think Behavorial health department also has a list of housing as well.
I don’t know where you live but where I live, rent is also extremely high too.

In my understanding, only rich/higher up middle class people with good retirement or a house to sell can afford assisted living. If you poor, you’re going to post acute where Medi-Cal or Medi-cad may cover. But I’m not sure. When I was working for an assisted living facility, all the people living there had some kind of retirement/investment or had sold a house to fund their stay.
@Mdreaming101 - People in the assisted living facility you worked in had assets?
*scratching head* For some reason I thought you had to meet some kind of basic poverty requirement for those places...not that I want to go. I don't. Right now I can still do what I need to do, most of the time. I'm not even 50, let alone 65. But I appreciate the answer. If the day comes where I need someone to wash my behind, it will truly be a horrible day...for whoever's on shift, not just me! 😄
Yup, they all had some source of $$ and it certainly isn’t low income. Before I left, a coworker told me it cost about 4K to live there. If you are eligible for Medi-care and Medicaid, you can get into long term care like nursing home but most likely wouldn’t be assisted living like those separate apartments with dining room. It will be more hospital settling. I hope u won’t ever get to that stage. We all love our independence.
I rather leave earth early than go into that. I’m good going at 60s when I am still fully independent.
