My therapist referred me to a dr who does EMDR. I had my first appt the other day, just to talk about my goals and what to expect. Has anyone else done this before? Did it work for you?

I haven't had it and never knew it existed. How was your first session? Did it help? Have you tried other therapy or was this what doctor recommended? I can't say I know anything about this. You could try looking online and see other people's experiences on it or talking to your therapist might help. They should know what the positives are and what your get out of it but your also hear negatives as not all therapy can work in every aspect of your life.

Good to see you had a positivity experience. Hope it goes well for you from then on.

@TreaureSeekers3 Hi treasure EMDR is a therapy that is used quite often by health services now and EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a psychotherapy that enables people to heal from the symptoms and emotional distress that are the result of disturbing life experiences.

@sadie63 I'm at the same point as you are. I've had 2 sessions now to discuss my ptsd and am slated to begin the actual treatment tomorrow. My therapist tells me that there is a lot of empirical data that shows this can work. It seems a bit odd to me but I'll know more tomorrow.

I had my first full session today. It's kind of like exposure therapy in that you focus on incidents which seem to have led to ptsd, depression, etc. The back and forth eye movement while focusing on these images is supposed to help heal. I found my first session to be helpful, although it did dredge up memories which had lain dormant all these years. I was drained and somewhat emotional at the conclusion of the session.

@sadie63 and @gene2017 (and anyone else who wants to weigh in),

I'd be interested in reading any follow-ups to this thread. Was EMDR helpful? Has anyone else tried it?

@EnnuiDeVivre

I continue to undergo emdr therapy. I feel that I have made some progress but I find it difficult to say how much emdr was responsible for. I am still undergoing individual and group therapy in addition to taking medication. So unfortunately I just can't decide how effective emdr is. I think it's helping though and I will continue to undergo it.

I'm sorry I can't give you a more definitive answer but I think it's worth trying.

@gene2017

Thanks for your reply. A friend of mine is a psychotherapist trained in EMDR and has been urging me to seek out the treatment locally. From listening to her describe the mechanism involved, and from follow-up reading, I'm convinced that it is a reasonably evidence-based form of treatment for psychological trauma. There are scientists who have legitimate concerns about methods and assumptions in the research underlying EMDR, but these are par for the course in any scientific field of study, and I don't see enough evidence to call EMDR totally into question. I'm intrigued by it, but just haven't gotten around to making the appointment.

I hope it goes well for you!
