Lieing

Hey everyone I'm Matt, 33. I have a problem where I tell lies. Not massive malicious lies just stupid things like telling my wife I have done something when I haven't. For instance I was behind with a phone bill and instead of just saying I was behind I lied and said the bill must be wrong. There was no need for me to lie as I have the most understanding wife in the world and we can get through anything together. Does anyone else have a similar problem? They're just silly little porkies but what if it gets worse? Matt

Lie is kind of like a defense mechanism. Sometimes you subconsiously lie to protect yourself. You dont want to give a bad impression or something like that.

Hi Matt,

I had a similar problem during school and college, tbh it was to make myself more interesting or just so we could talk about something else!

You really need to get to the root of the problem and ask yourself why you feel the need to lie. You might be surprised at yourself for the reason, could be emotional..something happened in your past or something you're worried about for the future. It could be that you want things to stay perfect because that is the kind of life everyone wants.

I hope I helped. Good luck.

I agree, I think lying is a defence mechanism

@Mattlove

It can definitely be a kind of scary thing. When i was younger, i used to a lie a lot. about small things like you said. My mom wanted to set up a meeting with my teachers and i would genuinely forget to ask them so i would tell my mom that i forgot, for a couple of days. but she started to get really angry with me for not setting it up. so one day to avoid her getting mad at me, i lied and told her they said in a couple of days. i figured id ask them the next day and set it up. but of course i forgot. and my mom went to school thinking there was a meeting. it was really embarrassing for her, and i got in a lot of trouble. but i kept lying anyways. i would tell myself that small lies were no big thing.

the thing with lying is that no matter how small they are or start, it's a gateway. it'll lead to bigger things and it can get out of control before you know it. it's always better to be honest, no matter how scary it is for you of other's reactions. it's better for people to get mad with the truth, which they will respect, than being lied to. being lied to offends people. makes people think we think theyre stupid and easily fooled. and people don't respect that and won't respect you or want to deal with you.

have a good talk with your wife, tell her how you feel. see if yall can come up with ways to help you remember things. if yall create a safe environment, itll be easier to talk. maybe create a safe word, that lets the other know you need to talk about something hard or difficult. If she's as understanding as you say, i'm sure she will support you and want to help :)

itll all work out ! stay strong :)
