Mental Illness Awareness Week 2017
Since 1990, we have been recognizing Mental Illness Awareness Week during the first full week of October.
What can you do this week to help break the stigma the still surrounds mental illness? Here are some simple ideas:
- Follow a mental health organization on social media.
- Reblog an article or post about mental health that means something to you.
- Share your story and person experience.
- Answer honestly when someone asks "Are you OK?" or ask someone if they're OK and listen to them if they're not.
- If you're a Listener, take a few more chats than usual.
- If you're a Member and are struggling, reach out to a Listener. They care, I promise.
What is one simple step that you can do this month to recognize MIAW?
@lovelyllama13 ....
Last word anyone? ..... Mental Illness Awareness Week. I've never seen that abbreviation, Llama :)
@lovelyllama13
Those are some great ideas! Thank you for sharing
I'm definitely going to read up on some of the mental illnesses I haven't looked into yet
Circling back to this. Did anyone do anything special (or anything small even) to recognize MIAW?
@lovelyllama13
Social media is a powerful tool for reaching out and sharing messages. I actively promoted MIAW and organisations in Australia for support such as RUOK Day, Black Dog Institute and my local Suicide Prevention Network - options for outreach abound and their presence is becoming increasingly evident. Smashing stigma is crucial for those who want to seek assistance. Great thread and great initiative in MIAW.
Good Listening
@lovelyllama13 - What a week! I became a listener in the week of MIAW. Buzzfeed and Big Thinkers posted excellent series for MIAW.
