What do you look for in a therapist?
Hi I am an LCSW and love what I do. I know the stigma is real but this is such a cmfortable safe place to come for help! I'm wondering what we therapists can do to make it even easier? What do you look for in a therapist? I'd love to hear what you have to say!
It's an interesting question for various reasons, and it made me think. Like asking "What do you look for in a ski resort" implies you habitually and systematically evaluate ski resorts, this implies the same for therapists. I don't habitually evaluate either.
In real life when people ask about choosing a therapist I think it's like trying any other remedy that you might find on sale, and I sometimes suggest there are three things to look for. A simple list of ingredients clearly stated on the box is a plus. For a therapist this equates to a clear statement of modality (the theoretical basis for the therapy). Some concrete evidence that it's going to work is the second plus. I suggest the personal recommendation of a friend, family member or other trusted acquaintance is best.
I met two therapists recently who talked a little about their work. One of them impressed me because of her clear boundaries. She seemed to be confidently aware of what she could do and also what she couldn't do. I liked that. The other one seemed unsure of what he could do and equally unsure of what he couldn't, and I thought it a little scary for him to be let loose with clients. The third plus, I suggest, is that after talking a little there's something you definitely like about the therapist, even if you can't identify what it is.
As a listener here I'm disappointed by the lack of contact so far between therapists and the rest of the community. I'm encouraged to have come across your interesting question

@RarelyCharlie Thank you for writing! This is exactly why I'm reaching out. I'm totally new to the site and online therapy BUT I really believe it can work! Trying to figure out how best :) Thank you thank you. I don't plan to be a stranger. If you have tips on how to get more connected, even just technical I welcome them.
