I appreciate my mom for being the person that physically and emotionally raised me to be the human being I am today. I think my mother is the reason why so many of my aspirations and passions in life are the way it is.
What might it say about me that at a late stage in life, I have no friends and all connections with my remaining family are severed?
I was "away from home" through most of my adult life, working in other places for months or a year or three at a time.
I tried to maintain friendships "back home" with a small circle of people, none of which knew the others. Over time, two passed away. Two others (a married couple) I knew for almost 25 years, saw a foolish mistake I made and used it to steal the majority of my life savings, completely destroying my life.
My relationship with my family was always difficult. A few years ago I was no longer able to do the work I had done (mentally/emotionally, and due also to vision problems) so I decided to remain close to home to spend time with my elderly mother. We discovered that she really doesn't "like me", and in fact cannot tolerate me.
When all of the above caused me to have a mental crises, I discovered that my few remaining other friends had no time or attention to give me.
Now I'm living in another state, in a rural area near a small town. I know no one here. I don't have any expectation of having anything in common with anyone here.
So I have no appreciation for either family or friends. I trust no one. I want no one in my life. Seeing the lives of others over the years, I believe that human relationships are 90% pretense and wishful thinking. For all of you who feel otherwise about your own relationships, I wish you the very best.
@usedItUp Thanks for sharing this. I do believe it's important to have a support system. I'm in awe of your complete independence. Amazing!

Amazing how easily people assume that you are "a loner".
That is not the case, and I am not alone to the extent I am by choice.
I worked all over the U.S. for years in various places pursuing long-term temporary opportunities in engineering, as that offered me opportunities I would not have had otherwise, lacking a university degree, having only K-12. I never intended it to be most of my life, but that's how it worked out..
At the time I discovered my 'friends' had stolen most of what I earned, I was just reaching a place financially where I no longer needed to live that way anymore. And a congenital eyesight problem was progressing to the point that I no longer could do so.
I have no desire to be alone.. but that's where I am. I'm incredibly bitter and angry every minute of every day.
I moved here to a rural area where the cost of living is lower while I attempt to learn a range of new technical skills which would enable me to work from home. Problem is, I have no more savings on which to live while I continue that effort. I worked more than anyone I've ever known, under insane stress levels and in extremely dangerous conditions to earn so that I would not be in need in my later years... and here I am, almost destitute. And at an age were no one will hire me, living in an area where opportunities are very limited.
That's life... you can avoid debt, avoid vices, and work hard, and still just one mistake can ruin you. I may have lived all the years I will.. I've lost all spiritual belief, and I can face death with no fear. I've come to accept that my time may be short. I've lived with no place to call home in my younger years, and was hungry a few times. I won't face that now. I'd rather quietly leave this world. There's nothing for me here anyway.
Life would be wonderful, if not for the human beings which infest this small planet. Too many of them are vicious and totally lack the capacity to care about the consequences of their actions or the effect their evil will have on other people's lives. At least they can no longer reach you in the grave. Choosing when and in what manner you depart from this life is the one thing you can control. And at that point, no one can reach you.
One of my longest friendships is the best as far as companionship on the journey and consistent, unconditional positive regard.
I am most appreciative of my family of origins witness of me in all stages in life. That continuity is there with family more than in any other relationship for me.
With both family and friends, knowing that I have people that I can turn to for support and for times of celebration.
I have hurt my family alot. I've made them live in sorrow and misery. I'm not sure if they have ever forgiven me but I hope one day they will find it in their hearts to forgive me. I'm still trying to make them forgive me and will always keep on doing that. I know GUILT is ugly but I can't control it. I have lived to accept it.
I really do appreciate that my family not once backfired me with what I did. I'm grateful for having my family around.
@LadyInSilence I'm sorry to hear that. I'm sure your family will come around. Just give them time. Guilt is difficult to live with but it's important to forgive yourself first, and the forgiveness from others would follow. Take care!

Thank you for your kind words. I have not forgotten myself and I’m not sure if I know how to do that. Perhaps my sense of forgiveness is felt from seeing my loved ones happy and I hope I will live to the day I truly forgive myself.
@LadyInSilence You will! I know it!

Thank you
