what does it mean when people say "Time heals all wounds"?
What does this common phrase mean to you?
Very often we hear:

But what do they mean by this?
Does time truly heal all wounds? Does it matter on the severity or depth of the wound created? Are there wounds that are not able to heal over time? Do certain things need to happen over time in order for healing to take place, if so what are they?
What does healing really mean to you? How does healing happen? Are there specific steps one must take in order to heal? What happens when we choose to ignore the wounds created? Does time still heal them? How do we know if we have truly healed or if we have buried those wounds?
How would you complete this sentence: "A healed me would be......."?
I am interested in knowing your thoughts on the phrase "time heals all wounds"

Time is the very essence by which we are able to move past something.
@beYOUtywithin
It means that they don't know anything smarter to say.
Nope time doesn't heal all wounds. Time is probably needed but it's not the only thing you need for healing. If you don't take proper care of a wound it can become infected i.e. cause more problems than the original one. If someone keeps poking around in it it'll stay open or get worse. Everyone is different when it comes to healing both physically and psychologically, depending on their general health and resilience, genetics, support system etc. You may be able to assess and treat a wound yourself, or you may need professional help. If it's a big one, you probably can't expect to go about your life as before while you're healing. The wound may leave a scar and you may always be more sensitive and prone to get hurt again there. Real healing might also mean that you look for what caused that wound in the first place and how you could prevent it from happening again.
"A healed me would be......."?
- able to find and keep the meaningful connections that I need
- energetic enough to do what I love and care about for money, pleasure and contributing to a better world
- one of the happiest people around

well said. I really like the way you added about wounds leaving scars, which can be more sensitive even with time. I think scars are sometimes a reminder of the wound, the pain we felt, and sometimes just seeing those can resurface that painful memory. These deeper or more painful scars, I believe can be less sensitive over time and hard work, but at you pointed out, providing adiquate care and attention to that area/memory/wound can certainly help. They can also be somethiing we learn and grow from, and become something of a reminder of pain we have overcome and be seen in maybe a better light in some ways as well.
Over time time will heal all wounds, but it may take time to heal as you move forward in your life.
In my experience, this phrase is only part of the story. My Mom died of breast cancer when I was 12, and for probably 15 or more years after that, I was a wreck. I was angry and felt abandoned and lonely and sad. It wasn't until an off-comment from a stranger in passing that probably meant very little to her at the time helped to put things into perspective for me. Time helped to distance me from what happened and got me to a place where I could be mentally open to that experience and be ready to let go of the negativity that I clung to tightly for so many years. But getting through rough emotions takes real work and a willingness to be open to new perspectives. It wasn't true that the passage of time alone helped me to heal (and even find a spiritual path and change my perspective on death!) - it was also the willingness to have those old wounds healed. The stories we create for ourselves can never end unless we want them to. That was a really hard lesson for me to learn and it took a VERY long time, but hey - better late than never.

Sorry to hear of your pain and thanks so much for sharing here. What I have taken from this is while there can be some raw wounds that we have to focus on in the present time, and maybe be extremely careful of in the moment, over time, we can regain strength and ability to be able to manage or work through and eventually let go of the pain that may have caused and even learn more about ourselves in this process.
@beYOUtywithin I think it depends on what wounds. Let's say you have a glass of salt and the salt is the wound. When you pour water (time), the salt gets diluted and hard to see. When we go through time, we accumulated more experiences which either mend our wounds or sometimes make them small enough to be able to let go of it and accept things for what it is. I think as time accumulates, we tend to forget more things as well.
@PacificSunrise
Great analogy. Like the salt that disolves and disburses through the water, a wound may desolve and be less powerful, but there is still a hint of it left throughout. In that, they can build up, or we can maybe cope with those smaller parts of it little at a time and be able to let go or move forward.
@beYOUtywithin Yes, that's right. Thanks for posting a very thought-provoking question.
I used to hear this saying all the time and get frustrated because I thought whoever came up with it must not have had any issues in life. Of course we all have our issues and it was wrong of me to think that.
After having some rough times, I've meet new people who fight for me to trust them. I would ask them to give me time to do it and the very last time I asked for time with something like this, I was told this saying again and I finally understand. I understand the saying. I think the author of it meant more that time is our time, not that it won't happen, just maybe when we want it and we have to be patient with oursevles too. It is perfectly fine to take time to heal yourself with your time. Never let anyone down talk you. You are beautiful. You are strong. And you can do anything. Just try.

I love this take on the phrase.
"time is our time" so true
We are each on our own journey in life, we all have our own battles we face and wherever anyone is in this time is perfectly ok and we can accept ourselves (and others) right where we stand in this very moment. Taking your journey at your pace and taking the time to create and take steps on your path is in your own time.

When new experiences overwrite the ones that gave the wounds.. but we must be willing to let it happen
@beYOUtywithin I thought I would never heal from my wounds. I went through trying to act everything was okay, to fleeing from the hurt (cutting out all the people and memories) until I was ready to process the anger. And with that, after two years, I had healed and I noticed I could forgive, since the hurt was no longer there. This is when I realised time heals all wounds. The active role that you play is trying to work through the hurt.
