Things People Who Deal With Addiction Wish You Knew
If this is part of your life story, please share your insights! What would you like the rest of us to learn? What should we know about people in this community? How would you like people to interact with you? Should people ask questions? What’s the best way for people to learn about this? Do you have any resources (books, movies, YT videos, etc) that will give us greater understanding and empathy and kindness toward people who experience the same things you do?
If you’re not on this journey, we welcome you to listen, learn, and ask respectful, good-faith questions! Open-ended questions are highly encouraged, as they give people the space to share their unique experiences in their own words. While this is a safe space to learn about things you’ve never experienced, please remember to be sensitive, and avoid sharing harmful stereotypes or debating someone's lived reality. If you have a question, ask it with empathy. If someone gently corrects you, please be open to learning. Let's have a gentle, fun, friendly conversation where we support one another, because it takes all sorts to make a world!

@jesusredeemedme2425 thanks for tagging me 💗
That it's not something we developed overnight.. I got into my addiction at a very young age, and the pattern feels like it's wired to my brain :( when the urges gets really strong it's almost like I'm running on auto pilot.
I don't feel comfy talking about my addiction as in naming it. Even tho it's so common, I simply call it an addiction, cus' i fear being judged.
The more I realise the seriousness of it and how much impact it has had on me, the more I'm starting to hate and feel uncomfy when friends and people make jokes of it.
I have been dealing with it almost every single day, resisting the urges, grounding and reaching out..after a slip or relapse it's very draining :( and no one see's it.
It still at times feel very difficult to love myself and i don't like forcing it.
It impacts our social life, studies, mental health etc. and we doubt ourselves a lot and there's a voice in our head that always seems to whisper " If people knew about my addiction they wouldn't love me the same."
We're not our addictions. It's just that it's been a part of our life for long enough to feel really hard to let go and heal from overnight.
I set out to conquer an addiction, then found out my nervous system was compromised at a young age due to trauma and the addiction was a way that I had found to help me cope with the pain.
It grew into something I did when I was sad, or happy, or when I needed to celebrate, etc.
I'm not a bad person. I'm just someone who is scared, got hurt early in life and found a way to cope with the pain.
I am trying to take steps daily on my journey to freedom. Some days I fall, but I keep getting up and trying again
