Things People Who Have Alopecia Wish You Knew
If this is part of your life story, please share your insights! What would you like the rest of us to learn? What should we know about people in this community? How would you like people to interact with you? Should people ask questions? What’s the best way for people to learn about this? Do you have any resources (books, movies, YT videos, etc) that will give us greater understanding and empathy and kindness toward people who experience the same things you do?
If you’re not on this journey, we welcome you to listen, learn, and ask respectful, good-faith questions! Open-ended questions are highly encouraged, as they give people the space to share their unique experiences in their own words. While this is a safe space to learn about things you’ve never experienced, please remember to be sensitive, and avoid sharing harmful stereotypes or debating someone's lived reality. If you have a question, ask it with empathy. If someone gently corrects you, please be open to learning. Let's have a gentle, fun, friendly conversation where we support one another, because it takes all sorts to make a world!

@jesusredeemedme2425 Looking forward to this thread ❤️
Been experiencing, hair loss, shedding, thinning due to overstyling, heat damage, perming, straightening, colouring, you name it.
I went wild when I was permitted so I experimented a lot and the results varied. I don't wash my hair every day.
I'm not neglecting it. I'd rather insensitive thoughts were kept to yourself. Every time I went to a salon, all I heard was...... Oh you realise your hair is soo thin.
Knocked my confidence but then I realise. I don't go around insulting others and making them feel worse.
I figured out some do's and don'ts. Experiment with brands, not all are helpful.
Limit hair washing to once or twice a week. A good conditioner or hair oil will do you so much good.
Heat protection sprays do nothing. I gave up heat and my hair thanked me.
Cut it regularly, the more often the better. Mine scarcely grew now it's so fast I chop it monthly.
if you can, leave your strands loose, no tight hair bands or clips or tight braids or buns.
What also helped was to stop using brushes and combs that pulled my hair, now I use my hands, so so gentle.
Don't compare yourself to others. Work with what you have. I went from long thick healthy to thin but really short and rebellious but cuter.
