Things People Who Have/Had Cancer Wish You Knew

If this is part of your life story, please share your insights! What would you like the rest of us to learn? What should we know about people in this community? How would you like people to interact with you? Should people ask questions? What’s the best way for people to learn about this? Do you have any resources (books, movies, YT videos, etc) that will give us greater understanding and empathy and kindness toward people who experience the same things you do?

If you’re not on this journey, please share insights you’ve learned while interacting with those who are, whether family, friends, or anyone else. Share things you’ve read, and ask if they’re true. Share beliefs that you have, ask questions, and more! This is a safe space where you can learn about things you’ve never experienced. <3

Let’s have a gentle, fun, friendly conversation among friends! As a song in one of the Land Before Time movies says, “It takes all sorts to make a world!” <3

Don't keep reminding them that they had or have cancer. ☺️🤗

What do you mean?

@jesusredeemedme2425

By asking how are you feeling? Most people that I have met would rather their days go on as normal without being reminded.

I cant believe you had/have cancer (especially at a young age)

Yeah, I wish people with disabilities or diseases were allowed to just be… people.

I haven’t, thankfully <3

not everyone who has had cancer had a dramatic experience. i caught mine very early, had it taken out and i was lucky enough to just recover and never need more treatment. so far, anyway. I swear sometimes people sound almost disappointed. it makes me feel like a cancer poseur, lol.

Still the best thing about having it is not having it anymore. best of health to all

My cousin is a cancer survivor and I remember that soon after his diagnosis, the news spread like wildfire. It wasn't necessary and it hurts seeing people gossip about something so life altering. I wish people were kinder and more supportive.

Also, don't judge a patient for eating too much or too little. The appetite isn't really under control given the heavy chemotherapy) other treatments but nourishment can't be sidelined. Let them have a say in their diet management. Don't be too quick to come to conclusion about their health only based on their consumption.
