Do You Ever Just Pretend To Be Happy ?
Pretending to be happy is a sign that something is wrong. There are a couple of reasons you might choose to do this over revealing how you’re actually feeling.
Convenience, fear of being misunderstood, or not wanting to burden people with your negative feelings can drive you to fake happiness.
But if your state of happiness isn’t genuine, can you ‘trick’ yourself into being happy?
Why doesn't pretending to be happy make you happier?
-
You’re Pretending, Not Feeling
It is important to note the distinction between being happy and pretending to be happy. When you pretend something to yourself, you don’t really believe it. All you’re doing is putting on an outward show to appease others.
-
Faking Happiness Can Be Harmful
Faking happiness is more harmful than helpful. The first step to mental health and emotional contentment is to be honest about your situation. -
Acceptance Is The Key To Improved Mental Health
Accept that it is entirely natural to feel unhappy or depressed. It’s nothing to be ashamed of! It happens to all of us at different times in our lives.
Signs You’re Pretending To Be Happy
-
Drowning Your Problems
This coping mechanism can lead to much bigger problems in the long run.
-
Hiding Behind Small Talk
Someone in your close circle asks you how you’re doing, and you immediately deflect by talking about the weather. Or you offer a polite “fine.” Sound familiar? When you do this, you’re trying to shift attention away from yourself.
-
Glued To A Screen
If you’re looking to distract yourself from what’s wrong, there’s a good chance you’re glued to your phone, laptop, or television. You might spend hours gaming, streaming, or on social media not to have to process your emotions.
-
Using Humor As A Shield
A painful topic comes up, and you immediately change the subject of the conversation or crack jokes about it. Let’s be honest – we’ve all done this occasionally. You’re attempting to hide your anxiety and discomfort when you do this.
-
Avoiding People
Spending time alone means you don’t need to pretend to be happy for other people if you’re feeling sad.
Pretending To Be Happy – How To Stop
-
Get Real About Your Personal Life
Swap the chit-chat for some real conversation! Confide in a trusted friend. Whether it’s an issue with your physical health, love life, or work stress, find someone to talk to about what’s happening in your life.
-
Find The Help You Need
Look after your mental health and it is alright to seek professional help.
-
Shift Your Focus
Finding out what makes you happy and consistently trying to operate in those spaces can be helpful. You might want to read up on our elements of happiness to get started.
-
Practice Smiling
Smiling doesn’t just make you look happier; it actually makes you feel better! If you’re having difficulty changing your frown into a smile, listen to happy music or watch a funny video. Surround yourself with photos of loved ones and things that make you smile.
-
Look For Reasons To Be Happy
Don’t look for ways to pretend to be happy – instead, look for reasons to truly be happy.
Final Thoughts
Faking happiness can isolate you from potential help. It can be hard to open up, but having support can make all the difference if you’re going through a tough time!
Addressing your emotions is healthy and essential for your mental and emotional well-being. Accepting your true emotions can help you to process and work through them.
It’s time to stop pretending. Remember – you deserve authentic happiness, and at the end of the day, happiness starts with you.

@trueconfidant123 Said this once this morning already WoW I Mean WoW I have been playing the game since the beginning of my Medical journey began. It’s been a long journey but I am still learning how it works and how I feel about the world around us all and how we play together as a community in the world of the universe and how we can be connected to each other’s lives together.✌️Out True .🤗🤨😎
I have to confess, I’ve been doing it for a long time, and now I’m so tired of it that it’s been hard to smile, to recognize myself, I’ve been hiding from people, I’ve been angry, I’ve been irritated. I think everything it’s coming out.

I'm sorry to hear that you've been going through a tough time, but remember, it's okay not to be okay. Recognizing how you feel is the first step toward positive change. It's okay to ask for support and share your struggles with trusted friends or professionals. Healing takes time, but you can rediscover your genuine happiness and sense of self. Keep moving forward, and you'll find brighter days ahead.

I heard my friend say this to me the other day, "You faking smiles and being unhappy affects everyone around you who's close to you in some way or another bro, sometimes you don't even realise how much. I'd rather try to help you work your way towards happiness than watch you drown in fake smiles".
Dude got me soaked in tears for the first time in our decade old friendship

Your friend's words come from a place of deep care and friendship. It's a reminder that true friends are there to support and uplift you, especially during challenging times. Embrace this moment of vulnerability and let it strengthen your bond. You're never alone in your journey towards happiness, and with friends like these, you'll find the strength and support you need to rediscover genuine smiles. Cherish this bond!

thank you so much for this article, it gave me a lot of insight and i could really relate to this deeply... For the past few year's I've faked smiles and happiness everyday so I wouldnt be a bother to people around me.. I didnt have any friends who'd listen and let me confide in so I always told myself and others everything was fine. I would always be there for my friends, change myself for them and put on a fake personality to fit in with people best. To this day, i smile on a daily basis but I cant even remember what a genuine smile or being happy feels like. I miss the feeling but I just hope i can prevent others from going down this path too.
even tho ive already lost hope in myself, this post was rlly encouraging,, i might try out ur advice when i can... Thankyu again <3
@blackfeather1603
Awh I"m so sorry you had to do that
@trueconfidant123 ok I'm really taking my smiles right now. Actually don't know what the point of trying is anymore 😞
@Tinywhisper11
I'm really sorry to hear that you're feeling this way, but please remember that there are people who care about you and want to help. You don't have to face this alone, and there's hope for brighter days ahead. We love you. You're meowgical. 💕

@trueconfidant123 thanks confidant ❤ thanks caticorn ❤
The glued to the screen part is me, because I don't interact with people when I'm overwhelmed or struggling with intrusive thoughts. Using my laptop and just browsing has become my coping mechanism. Im trying to branch out and engage in more activities to break this habit, but it's hard...
@trueconfidant123 Although it's not the best thing to do, sometimes if you're going thru something that makes you feel sad. pretending that you feel fine or feel good then it helps to get thru the day alot easier
