Do You Ever Just Pretend To Be Happy ?

User Profile: trueconfidant123

Pretending to be happy is a sign that something is wrong. There are a couple of reasons you might choose to do this over revealing how you’re actually feeling.
Convenience, fear of being misunderstood, or not wanting to burden people with your negative feelings can drive you to fake happiness.
But if your state of happiness isn’t genuine, can you ‘trick’ yourself into being happy?

Why doesn't pretending to be happy make you happier?

  • You’re Pretending, Not Feeling
It is important to note the distinction between being happy and pretending to be happy. When you pretend something to yourself, you don’t really believe it. All you’re doing is putting on an outward show to appease others.
  • Faking Happiness Can Be Harmful
Faking happiness is more harmful than helpful. The first step to mental health and emotional contentment is to be honest about your situation.
  • Acceptance Is The Key To Improved Mental Health
Accept that it is entirely natural to feel unhappy or depressed. It’s nothing to be ashamed of! It happens to all of us at different times in our lives.

Signs You’re Pretending To Be Happy

  • Drowning Your Problems
This coping mechanism can lead to much bigger problems in the long run.
  • Hiding Behind Small Talk
Someone in your close circle asks you how you’re doing, and you immediately deflect by talking about the weather. Or you offer a polite “fine.” Sound familiar? When you do this, you’re trying to shift attention away from yourself.
  • Glued To A Screen
If you’re looking to distract yourself from what’s wrong, there’s a good chance you’re glued to your phone, laptop, or television. You might spend hours gaming, streaming, or on social media not to have to process your emotions.
  • Using Humor As A Shield
A painful topic comes up, and you immediately change the subject of the conversation or crack jokes about it. Let’s be honest – we’ve all done this occasionally. You’re attempting to hide your anxiety and discomfort when you do this.
  • Avoiding People
Spending time alone means you don’t need to pretend to be happy for other people if you’re feeling sad.

Pretending To Be Happy – How To Stop

  • Get Real About Your Personal Life
Swap the chit-chat for some real conversation! Confide in a trusted friend. Whether it’s an issue with your physical health, love life, or work stress, find someone to talk to about what’s happening in your life.
  • Find The Help You Need
Look after your mental health and it is alright to seek professional help.
  • Shift Your Focus
Finding out what makes you happy and consistently trying to operate in those spaces can be helpful. You might want to read up on our elements of happiness to get started.
  • Practice Smiling
Smiling doesn’t just make you look happier; it actually makes you feel better! If you’re having difficulty changing your frown into a smile, listen to happy music or watch a funny video. Surround yourself with photos of loved ones and things that make you smile.
  • Look For Reasons To Be Happy
Don’t look for ways to pretend to be happy – instead, look for reasons to truly be happy.

Final Thoughts

Faking happiness can isolate you from potential help. It can be hard to open up, but having support can make all the difference if you’re going through a tough time!
Addressing your emotions is healthy and essential for your mental and emotional well-being. Accepting your true emotions can help you to process and work through them.
It’s time to stop pretending. Remember – you deserve authentic happiness, and at the end of the day, happiness starts with you.

Nice list / article to share.

I would only add Faking happy does not only effect YOU.....

If friends or loved ones believe your fake happy.......... it can make them feel something is wrong with them because you always seem happy....and that eludes them.

Sometimes we do NOT take the best care of our own mental health but seem to care about others more. So seeing faking could be hurting those around you as well may help people face up to the faking for both themselves and others.

Absolutely, you've highlighted an important aspect of faking happiness. It can indeed have unintended effects on those close to us. Genuine connections are built on honesty and understanding. Thank you for sharing your points with us.

@trueconfidant123 It's more concerning doing this as a helper :') Kinda always been told to "he happy" by my parents and I've kinda just became emotionless with anyone irl and a whole happy go-lucky online. Kinda hars hiding everything behind those two facades. But yk it's fine!!😋😋✌ I'll be fine!!! :33

This thread was inspired by you and my inner battles. I've not been brave enough to reply to your 'true story' posts. I'm sorry. I can't imagine the pain you're going through within. And how you still have the expertise to make the people around you smile with your uplifting words. I admire your strength. You are our role model.

Even as a listener... all the time. I was at a job interview when the interviewer told me I have such a bubbly personality. And that's when it struck me that I'm always changing my personality, the way I laugh, the jokes I make, etc. Based on who I'm talking to, it has led me to such an identity crisis. Who am I when I'm not with others, what's the real me? If you're reading this, it's just a reminder that everyone struggles no matter what but it's what we do in those moments of struggling that really matter! Send a message if you're struggling with the same things. Let's figure this out together :)

Thank you for commenting. I am glad you are working on finding originality again after these instances that caused the self reflection. I appreciate you for pointing out how subtly the fake attitude overpowers us and our subconscious mind falls prey to it unfortunately. Sending you loads of love and light! Thank you for being 'you'!

I fake happiness all the time when I'm down, up until the moment I can't do it anymore and then I try to find some ways to open up somehow, to somebody that's willing to listen qt that moment.

But for the big part I do the faking not to bother people with my constant negative feelings. Here in my country everything negative is like a sticky devil that jumps on you when somebody else talks about it so it's a lot easier to fake usually. But there are other places I can lose the mask. It's good to lose it sometimes :)

I am sorry to heart that. I understand how challenging it can be to constantly mask your feelings. I appreciate your thoughtfulness and acceptance. Opening up to someone who's willing to listen can be incredibly therapeutic. Keep being kind to yourself and embracing authenticity.

@trueconfidant123 I'm sick of wearing the social mask all the time. I'm sorry for the negativity but it is what it is. This drawing is about that social mask. I wish I could throw it away and talk to people but the stigma is really strong in my country. I have only a few friends that know but almost nobody understands it completely.
