Hello, lovely Positivity and Gratitude Community! FWUZe4EqU86wlh-OZtk_Ys9QWUe75nyU1VyuH82xarnkUt1GcoZ-Btqz6zMZEpXzaQ8TPAtgneB9JG6nbUGrgqMTYww6LvS6E3hpkpGt_4CSBYnw9f9uhpbGGWT_vQ2UcIg5Fbr- I hope all of you are doing well. Today I bring to you a very interesting topic that I believe a lot of us would love to discuss which is romanticizing one's life. So we’ll be discussing what romanticism is, what would be regarded as romanticizing one’s life, it’s benefits and how to apply it in our life.

What does romanticism mean? Romanticism (noun): describing things in a way that makes them sound more exciting or mysterious than they truly are. By definition, it seems that romanticism is a nice way to make life more enjoyable than it appears to be on a surface level. To speak a little about romanticism’s history, it was a movement that originated in the 18th century, highlighting human emotions and glorifying the past, the culture and nature. The romanticists of olden times recounted intense emotions as being equally important for making sense of the world we live in. Now, referring to our topic for today, what would romanticize one’s life mean? In simple words, romanticizing one’s life would entail giving ordinary things in life an intention to exist and be there, to love it in its simplicity. When you wake up, the first thing in your mind would likely be “I want to sleep again,” a lot of us can relate to that! Our lives have become so mundane that we hardly have the motivation to repeat the same day yet again. However, with romanticism, it’s really easy to break the mundane cycle and try to make more of your everyday things.

Romanticizing your life is giving meaning and intention to your everyday tasks. Waking up with the sunlight brushing your skin, brewing your coffee and soaking its aroma, looking out the window of a sunny city with people on the streets walking/driving to a place of purpose, or of birds singing in their melodious voice, taking a relaxing shower, letting the water release all the tension from the previous day, making yourself a colourful breakfast and just basic things you do in your day to day life. A lot of the days doing this can be rough when you don’t have the motivation to do it, but it’s during these days when romanticizing the simple things become even more important, to make it worthwhile. It means we have to sometimes accept the simple things, the little ones which we wouldn’t’ pay heed to and we don’t have to be writers, poets, or artists to achieve this, all we need to do is pay attention and realize everything is there in its place for a reason and has a purpose to make life what it is.

Now, what would be some benefits to romanticizing one’s life? These are but not limited to:

Feeling every day is special or believing there is something special about living. This instils hope in you.

Boosts your mood and makes you happier.

Being reminded that you’re the protagonist of your own life story. This makes you feel brave and ready to take on whatever the world sends your way.

Having more reasons to smile and a source of motivation to look forward to even the mundane tasks that you have got to do.

There are numerous benefits of romanticizing our life as mentioned above and now I would like to share some easy to apply tips for the same:

1. Documenting things that you find beautiful. Have you ever come across a YouTube video where the person uploading it has beautifully edited their video to make it appear so much more appealing and leading us to wonder how we didn’t observe it before? Look around you, what do you think is pretty, write it down, take a picture or even make a drawing of it! This will help you when you feel down by making a link with a moment you found to be special and the one you found worth treasuring, hence making you feel better in the recalling moment.

2. Play music in the background. Music is an art form that a huge population feels connected to. It has been proven to be helpful while studying/working or doing household chores. It helps us in interlinking something that we would generally like (the music we listen to) to something that we may or may not find enjoyable (studying/working). This creates an association and we tend to do our work well. If you would like to watch something similar to this idea, it’s worth checking out this video - This will drastically change your life. It talks about the pain-pleasure principle given by Sigmund Freud which states that people would do anything or prefer to do anything that would help them avoid pain and gain pleasure.

3. Decorate your surroundings. Make your home more comfortable and something that you’d like to see more of. If making your furniture be colourful helps you, maybe do that! You can also make crafty decorations for your home or buy things that look pretty to you. Make your surroundings something you’d want to be surrounded with.

4. Create a mood board for yourself. This could be a physical board similar to the image below (the image is of a vision board) or it could be on social media as a page. You can find a lot of aesthetics under some tags and in the past, they have personally turned out to be helpful for me. If you like the idea, maybe it’s worth checking it out.

5. Watching movies and TV shows that romanticize life. A very good example of this can be Ghibli Studio movies. Watching them really puts one at ease and makes them look forward to doing the same things no matter how little they may be. I remember coming across a Tumblr post which said that, Hayao Miyazaki (co-founder of Studio Ghibli) has said on numerous occasions about wanting kids to believe that life is always worth living and there is something beautiful in it despite the hard challenges it occasionally carries.

Question. What are your thoughts on the romanticism of life and do you think it would help us become more positive and happier? Let us know by replying to this thread!

I'm so glad that I've stumbled upon this post, lumiere! I must say that I'm a natural romanticizer. In fact, it's a big part of my life, actually. For years now, I've been allowing my gratitude to blossom so much so that it can be quite addictive to try to appreciate all of the naturally occuring things in life as well as the feelings I can consciously derive from them or the feelings that come automatically from them. It makes life so much more fulfilling when you have an eye for the small things in life! Part of my ideal day and daily routine by extension includes meditation. The meditation serves to clear my mind, to solve problems and to appreciate everything that the world has offered me in the past, in the present and in the future. There are so many things to appreciate, both visually and sensationally. Anything involving nature, weather, home decor, shapes, art, music, food, lifestyle, culture and so much more! I've never considered the idea of a mood board, but I definitely appreciate different aesthetics, as it were. I love the sensations and sights of the seasons, spring, summer, fall and winter in particular. This post of yours has inspired me to think more about this passion that I've never properly define. Thank you so much for sharing! I hope we can get the chance to talk about this more as well as your other interests. It's amazing to know that someone out there thinks about life in a similar way. :)

@BearListens

Bear, thank you so much for reading this post and sharing your thoughts with us! I am super duper glad you stumbled across this post as well. I am a natural romanticizer too! it's lovely that you've been practising gratitude for so many years now. there is really so much of beauty around us and so many pleasant feelings we derive from them, at times, it's difficult to be mindful or grateful for them, so hearing that you are just like me and so many others who appreciate what's already there in its simplest form makes me incredibly happy! it does make life much more fulfilling and satisfying. meditation is amazing and I have been trying to include more of it in my life, it's been hard to be consistent but I am glad it has become an ingrained attribute in your life. you've named things that I genuinely see so much beauty and peacefulness in! a mood board can be quite handy for some but for other people, it's more of just taking pleasure and storing those moments. seasons are marvellous, I love how the surroundings can periodically change and to be so aesthetic naturally is just mindblowing to me. aw, I am so glad my post could that for you! and for sure, I'd love to chat sometime and get to hear more of your views! for now, I hope you're well, Bear. good luck with all that lies ahead! do hope you're enjoying life
