Importance of Self-Care

Now, you're probably thinking "how could self-care be linked to happiness?". Well, I want to ask you this. What is your reasoning behind why you want to be happy? Do you look back and smile at the past? Do you feel as if you are your first priority?

We've all experienced some sort of distress, sadness, disappointment, oh the list can go on and on. With those moments, we need to learn how we take care of ourselves because when we are emotionally content with ourselves, we can truly live a happy life.

I want you to take this opportunity to share (only if you're comfortable) with ways on how you are going to prioritize your well-being in the future. I want you to think about your goals, responsibilities, and people in your life. How are you going to make this life worth living more enjoyable for you? Maybe it's reserving an hour before bedtime that is totally dedicated to pampering yourself. Maybe it's making a goal to read a chapter a day of your favorite book. This life is so beautiful and you are too. The psychology of happiness begins with you.

This post came at a great time. I look forward to seeing how people practice self-care so I can learn from their example. I'm not very good at it. I don't tend to think about relating to myself in that way at all. I don't feel like I deserve such positive attention. I don't believe I'm worth it. It feels like a waste of resources. Worse, I'm terrified that if I practice self-care and indulge in such a self-focused way, I will become full of myself and damage my relationships, which are very important to me... I don't know how to change these beliefs... But while I sort out these barriers to self-care, getting some ideas of what I might enjoy by seeing what others are doing may be inspiring.

@blogger123 I think sometimes self-care can be really simple. Which is not to knock pampering or treating yourself or saving up to splurge on something like a massage or spa day or something.

Sometimes managing "the basics" can go a long way: enough food, hydration, sleep, etc. A good exercise session in the gym. A walk outside in nature. A meditation session. Doing something you haven't done in a while like attend a Meetup or an old class or seeing a movie in the movie theater. It can be easy to let stuff like this slide in the need to get things done but once in a while it can be just the thing to help recalibrate and recenter.
