Understanding the difference between the terms grief, mourning and bereavement.
I wanted to make a post on the difference between the terms grief, mourning and bereavement. Often these three terms are listed together often as the name of a class, etc. As a hospice doula I've been asked to specify the differences a lot. All three are a stage of grief. In this contact grief is referring to the internal experience. Mourning is the outward display of grief and bereavement is the 13 month time period of grief and mourning following a death.
@SoulThought
Thank you for sharing, it's very interesting to see the differences!

@SoulThought There's no time line for grief. What is the 13 months for?
@mytwistedsoul That is correct, grief does not follow a timeline. In hospice care we define bereavement as the 13 month time period of mourning and grief following the death. Grief and mourning both often set in long before the death unless its a sudden unexpected death. Bereavement is the post-death state. In hospice we continue supporting the family during the 13 month bereavement period.
@SoulThought Oh! I misunderstood. Sorry about that! Anticipatory grief... I had that when my father got sick. It's really nice that the hospice supports the family for so long afterwards. Thank you for being there for those families 💜
