This was long ago. But I never properly grieved.
Hello new here.
I'm currently realizing I never got over my mother's death. I was 9 and I was there when it happened. Maybe I did cry for a while. But when people tell you she did it to herself an if only she lived a better life I started to feel bad for missing her. So I stopped crying over her loss and started laughing to cover up the pain of missing her. I'm jealous of those around me with mother that love them and treat them well. I'm angry that my friends think I would use their mother in any way shape of form when I adore her and love her as my own mother figure. It recently dawned on me though. She was 27 and this year I will be 27.
@affectionateHuman3630 @affectionateHuman3630 hello Human, thank you for posting this. Firstly, my condolences on the loss of your mother when you were 9; you were also present when it happened, which is a particularly difficult experience at such a young age. What stands out for me from your post is how your grief at the time was invalidated by others - this is known as 'disenfranchised grief', when the mourning of our loss is not seen as legitimate and our feelings then tend to be displaced, as you've said. This can then manifest later as 'delayed grief', which I talked about recently on another post. Very often, it's triggered by an anniversary or other significant emotional event, such as becoming the age that our parent died at - this seems to be true for you, Human. What I'm wondering is If you've sought help for your grief, or in some way acknowledged your loss, as I can hear from your post residual feelings that were never processed; I feel it would help if they were to be addressed. Please know the community is here to support you, Human and you're not alone here.
@DemiMondaine
Thank you for your kind words and response.
I have told myself this recently that I never really grieved her loss. Because if every year on her birthday I cry myself to sleep at night how can I have properly felt her loss. I tend to just play that it doesn't hurt. Especially when someone jokes with the yo momma jokes. I try to make them feel my pain. By saying oh she died and it makes me feel good when they don't know what to say to that. I know that weird and out of pocket but it's what my family did when I cried. Shes dead and she did it to herself. OD but I've been noticing people get really uncomfortable or feel really bad when I do this and it makes me feel worse. So I've stopped. But that was my outlet. Now what do I do. How else am I supposed to talk about her.
@affectionateHuman3630 Human, could you send me a message, as I may be able to help you on this one?
