Today in our Group Mod Meetings we talked about communicating with R-E-S-P-E-C-T.

R—Rapport

Developing rapport with our fellow mods as well as in the rooms can impact how we communicate. Also, this speaks to being active and engaged in the rooms we help moderate. Building up a rapport with the regular users and getting to know them can increase morale and help the users in the room understand your tone and style.

E—Explain

Communicating and explaining our roles, badges, chatroom rules and what warnings mean can increase the overall level of communication in the rooms.

S—Show

Show and demonstrate the behaviors you are helping teach while moderating. If you want the room to be kind and patient, show kindness and patience yourself.

P—Practice

Effective communication is a skill that we can continue to learn and build on. Keep practicing and using your communication tools.

E—Empathy

Have empathy for everyone you are communicating with either in PM's or in the rooms. Be patient and mindful of the struggles or challenges others may be facing.

C—Collaboration

Work together as a team! Collaborate with other mods you see in the rooms. If you enter a room and see another mod helping out, don't hesitate to PM them and learn more about how you can work together.

T—Technology

We face unique barriers when communicating via technology. We often cannot interpret tone because we can't hear who we are communicating with or see their facial expressions or gestures. Remember that sometimes what we say gets misinterpreted because all we can see if the text that someone types to us.

This is how I interpreted the R-E-S-P-E-C-T tool. What other ways can we use this to help improve our communication as group moderators? Did you interpret one of the letters differently than I did? Share your thoughts!

@Kate I think how you interpret it is great. I just throw in some more ideas and we have a salad laugh So maybe if we have more perspectives of different people we learn each other's wisdom.

Also Explain how members can stay safe by moving rooms, putting people on ignore or just not getting into the fray.

S—Show and demonstrate the behaviors you are helping teach while moderating. If you want the room to be kind and patient, show kindness and patience yourself.

P—Practice

Effective communication is a skill that we can continue to learn and build on. Keep practicing and using your communication tools. Keep being the change by gaining value and trust in the eyes of some of the people.

E—Empathy

Have empathy for everyone you are communicating with either in PM's or in the rooms. Be patient and mindful of the struggles or challenges others may be facing. Walk a mile in their shoes.

C—Compassion - Walk for a few seconds in the other person's shoes and maybe see they could be having a bad day and just need some time to get over this.

T—Training every day! Every day I start out with an attitude of a beginner learning something new and finding ways to deal with people that are living near the edges but still keeping the wisdom I learned without being fast to judge the situation.

This is not more right ideas, just someone else's perspective. What is your unique outlook?

I like the RESPECT way of looking at modding! I looked up rapport and learned about it!

@Kate RESPE

C= compassion. Without compassion it is easy to judge others and give warnings rather than

Caring. Thinking about what the other people need can go a long way toward creating a healthy environment in the Group Support Rooms.

Talk - talk is the most caring way to deal with people.

Teaching the members how to self care by ignoring and talking around someone who is disrupting. Ignore is more then just pushing the Ignore button. It is also means that members do not react or engage with the disrupter.
