*Trigger Warning* -- A quick note about the self-harm recovery team badge
*Trigger Warning*
I know many of you have noticed that the badge color for the Self-Harm Recovery Team in group support rooms has changed. Changing badge colors is not something we usually do by request and is not something I plan to accomodate again in the future except for very rare and special circumstances.
Because of the large number of team members that expressed concern that the previous color was triggering, the choice was made to change color to the current one. I take responsibility for the oversight and apologize to anyone that may have been triggered by the previous color choice.
Please tag others and spread the word.
Thank you for this thread! <3
@TortueDesBois

Thank you! :)
@Kate
Thanks for being mindful to those who have issues with the sites accessibility.
I'm not familiar with colors being triggering but what I am aware of is that color and contrast are serious accessibility topics.
What I would hope to seeing happen is that the 7 cups community raises awareness about web accessibility and acknowledges (by following accessibility guidelines) that the choice of color and contrast is not just a matter of taste, it's a tool for including or excluding lots of people who can't just adjust to colors.
Why it is important? Have a look at this:
https://accessibility.blog.gov.uk/2016/06/17/colour-contrast-why-does-it-matter/
Thanks for this thread and everything you all do here.
@kindSoul10
I really like this Kind ty for sharing
@kindSoul10, as far i am concerned colour is not my main point to talk,make it pink or green or any,it is not of that much importance but i have point that I dont believe colours should be such a major part of issue,u can see a pretty same colour in real life too,what would u do then?
@JovialOne I find that it's not that often that I would see such a colour combination in real life, unless printed in a book or something. There are also a combination of factors, looking at flowers is different than say reading text. I do experience real life triggers for migraines though, the sun coming at certain angles, walking up/down an escalator that's not working due to the lines. And then there are non-visual ones, like weather changes. I also experience many other triggers for other conditions.
In real life, I avoid when I can. Sometimes it's unavoidable and I suffer health effects because of them.
I do find some of the attitudes here (7cups in general at times) quite dismissive. There's lots of advice being given, like learn to manage your triggers better. I've never heard from anywhere how this is possible, nor any resources being shared on how to accomplish this. The skills I have regarding triggers are on identifying and avoiding/limiting as possible. When it comes to triggers on the site, that would mean avoiding the parts of the site that trigger me. If this is what we want people doing, that is far from being inclusive.
@JovialOne I have a sensory processing disorder and autism, I do have hypersensibility to colors, lights, noises/sounds, textures, pain and more, those may be a lot more painful for me. Even offline, I can get a sensory overload, get exhausted, in pain, overwhelmed and more. some flashy colors, like the actual support plus and self harm badges, old orange button, are impossible for me to look at. I avoid them and many other things offline which are too hurtful. 7 cups is an emotional website and should be more adjustable for those with some types of disability. many of them can't even use the site. I have some trust that it will be improved in future, but it could start by not having this kind of colors in badges
@kindSoul10 I think it wasn't about the color itself. It's about what it could be associated with.I believe there was a strong association witht he colour of a very special fluid that helps keep your body oxygenated, after it dries out. Not sure. But my gut feeling tells me that's it.
We took our community's opinions into consideration. This is for them. This is for all of you guys. I like that we went through with this harmless change.
so it's the new color? supposed be less triggering?
@TortueDesBois
I'd live to bring Self Harm and Mindfulness to the team. Work with community on some Things they may like to work on?????
@RumpleSteeleSkin I don't understand, sorry
@TortueDesBois
Hi bois using some mindfulness skills lessons the urges to self harm in many people. Skills lesson triggers in some ways to others.
@RumpleSteeleSkin okay, maybe create a new thread for it would be a good idea?
@RumpleSteeleSkin the two teams that are triggering colors are the new self harm one, and the support plus. i avoid to stay in the room when i see those badges, because it hurts my eyes too much
@TortueDesBois
Thank you bois for explaining and sharing that with me in a calm manner. I do hope tech team can give options on color and font control. But if not we can look for things to help
@TortueDesBois how are you?
@TortueDesBois
Sometimes I highlight forum posts so they aren't the same colours anymore when I see one that has wild neon colour combinations...I guess some people think it's being creative and lively and somehow don't want to try using normal default when someone mentions it being harder to read that way. I don't think I'd even want to read neon sharp contrast when I was a teen so it's not likely appealing to demographics as much as they may think either. I haven't really noticed badge colours in group chats but haven't been in them since the new groups formed I think.
@TortueDesBois It's the colour that you posted that I find to be triggering (although lesser than many other things here, depends on the amount of exposure to that one). The badge has been around longer than this topic. Is this what the badge was changed to?
@AffyAvo yes before the color was more similar to the disability badge, just a little bit more red than brown than this one, but now it changed for this new one.
@TortueDesBois probably not even easily readable on on white background.
@Kate
Hi again everyone
I just mostly was asking on this is all. Im very glad things can be changed so that the community still comtinues feeling safe and supportive.
Hello all
