Trying something new

I tried going vegetarian/vegan for about a month and I learned so much about health and food. I really wanted to stay with it but it's hard when you live with people who love meat who buy the food. I also wasn't doing a good job getting enough calories in the day. I now try to incoprate what I learned from that into what I eat now. I still eat meat but try to go free from animals products once a week

Good for you, sweetheart! It's great to be open to trying new things, especially in the nutrition department. I recall what a horrible time I had going veggie when I was 16 (an unbelievably long time ago). My dad took it personally as if I was rebelling against him, because he has always been a meat-itarian, and gave me H-E-double hockey sticks for it for a very long time. Nearly 30 years later, I still struggle with what meats I eat, but since 16, I have never gone back to eating mammals.

It's a personal choice for everyone, and it is okay to change your mind, so long as you continue to make thoughtful decisions. Humans are evolutionarily engineered to be omnivores, in order to aid in our genetic survival. The upside of that means you are free to make your own choices as to what works for your diet and your philosophy in the contemporary world.

I still don't know whether or not my dad forgives me for being a traitor to the temple of meat. But I have remained true to myself, so I frankly could not give 2 sh!ts about what anyone else believes. It was a hard-won and fabulous lesson to learn.

Bon chance on your journey!

@ladylazarus1971 I'm glad you could stick with it, that is so amazing. My mom was the same way but because she mainly because she didn't understand how someone could have a balanced meal with no meat protein. So awesome that even though your dad was against it you stuck what was working for you (:.

@treads

You can still get PLENTY of protein without meat. Chia and flax seeds, nuts especially peanuts/peanut butter, beans/legumes/lentils and even some dark leafy greens have protein.

Hi there!

As someone who has been the lone vegan in their house for many years, I understand how hard it can be! I'm glad that you learned about health and food by trying the diet for a month. Doing an animal-product free day is a great compromise and helps you use all those awesome things you learned.

If you ever want to talk about vegan-ism shoot me a PM!

@DancingAlong yeah it was tough having separate meals from everyone. And when I would try and cook them some really good vegetarian stuff they just didn't seem to enjoy it. And in the month I was being vegan/vegetarian I got really tired of tofu and beans what other protein do you like?

@treads Have you tried quinoa? It reminds you of pasta/carbs, but is a seed PACKED with protein (maybe not compared to animal products, but for veg? definitely!) Texture-wise, sort of like couscous. Not at all bad, even to non-veggie palates generally.
